About 2 weeks ago I got 2 male hamsters and have been keeping them in the same cage. (They were in the same cage at the pet store also.) At first they seemed to like each others company, but lately they have been chasing each other and have been what seems like playing but could also be fighting. Should I seperate them or are they just playing? Is this a bad situation? Thanks! IP: Logged |

Morning SummerGirl! I also have two male gerbils in the same cage. Mine seem to get along fine, one is a constant chewer/biter and the other is a sleepy friendly guy, they don't seem to fight or play together that much. I would say if you are worried about one of them getting hurt to divide them up, it isn't worth it to have a gerbil (or hamster) get hurt. Just a suggestion! Hi AmyGerbilGirl! Thanks for the advice and I'll do well to remember it. Yesterday my friend came over and we played with my hamsters a bit longer than I usually do and they were a lot nicer to each other. Maybe I just need to have them out of their cage a little longer so they don't get bored? IP: Logged |

I have noticed sometimes that when my Gerbils are acting frisky it helps to let them run around like crazy in their ball. I don't know whether or not hamsters like balls, as I've never had any hamsters, but the concept of extra exercise is the same, they enjoy it sometimes I think IP: Logged |

Hello! Thanks for the advice! Max is a great name for a hamster. One of my hamsters is named Scruffy and the other is named Memphis. Scruffy is brown and white with a black stripe on his check. Memphis is a solid smokey grey color. IP: Logged |

SEPERATE THEM, even though they are in the same cage in the pet store when they get older they will fight over territory. if you are lloking for cheap cages look on ebay. kyle IP: Logged |

hamsters girbles are very differnt. male hamsters should have separates homes. they are territorial and could actually kill eachother. i would buy another cage. the older they get the more aggressive they'll get. IP: Logged |

Hamsters are very territorial. As babies they are fine living with each other, but as the grow older, they become more aggressive and they enjoy their own space. It's a VERY bad idea to have two male hamsters in one cage. One could seriously injure the other. I know this from experience, please seperate them asap!! :0 If you are looking for pets that could live in the same cage with each other, gerbils and dwarf hamsters live in small or large groups without any problem. Anyway, back to your hamsters...I'm not saying you should cut off all communications between the hamsters,...just put in a cage seperator of some kind so they cannot fight, or purchase two cages. If you take them outside the cage, they can play and run around together, but you'd have to keep a close eye on them as they might start to fight. IP: Logged |
