Ok I may just be overreacting but Devo got a bath bout 2 weeks ago and my hubby used freekin dishwashing soap. Joy to be exact. like 2 days later I noticed a few lil places where his hair was thining. And now there are a few spots with no hair. There not red they look just like skin. I asked a friend who said its prolly just him growing, or the soap bothered him. I know nothing bout Mange but have read the stuff on here and nothing sounds like whats going on with him. No scabs no sores no redness. Anyone have this issue?

I have never seen mange, but there has been lots of talk about it lately. Maybe you should try to give him another bath with NO soap at all this time and wait a couple of days. If its not cleared up by Monday then you should take him to your vet. Let him know about the dish soap. If its not mange he may have had an allergic reaction and may need medication. Also, tell your hubby no more baths with Joy. YOu can buy doogy shampoo at the pet store. We use natural products on our hair so we use it on our dog aswell. You just want to be careful, concentrated stuff like that can really iritate dogs skin. IP: Logged |

It sounds like an allergic reation. Is there a lot of dandruff? If you, he might not have gotten all of the soap off the skin, and Devo could just be allergic. Bullys right, diswashing detergent is reallly harsh. IP: Logged |

Since there's no itching and scaling, if it was mange, it would be demodectic. But I doubt it. she could have autoimmune problems or endocrine problems. She could have htpothyroidism. All of these are if there are no itching and hot spots. If persists, let you vet give her a blood test. Also, about shampooing. Just my own personal opinion.I don't know if you shampoo you dog alot, but I feel you should just leave them alone unless they roll in something bad or make friends with a skunk or something. With the right dog food with mega 3 or omega 6, your dog should be smelling good and have a nice shine to it's coat. Too much shampooing just take away natural oils and dries the skin. I like to know later about the patchy fur. It's the only way to keep up on these things. IP: Logged |

Unseen, I never use "Dog Shampoo" I use what ever's in the house at the time much to my wife's dismay. However it is very very important to rinse thoroughly! I always Wash once Rinse twice. Walt IP: Logged |

Groovy thank you all for your input. But on the subject of not washing the doggie, maybe its just me or perhaps it'd the fact that he sleeps in the bed with us but I notice hes got some stinky feet. Like Ewwww we..... He likes pepermints so I usually give him like half a mint before bed time when I brush, so hes all fresh n clean. I know I know thats not ideal but there sugar free and are the size of a nickle so half isnt too bad. IP: Logged |

I dont think you should use just anything... but i have heard that you can use Dawn and it kills fleas. I used it once when i was out of dog shampoo and it worked fine. No bad reactions to it. Just make sure to rinse off good. IP: Logged |

i wasnt gonna say it but i also use dish soap in kacy, but she get a bath twice a week!! i use the dish soap, than my shampoo(for the smell!!! ) than my conditioner, for shine and softness!!! i dont know how many people pet kacy and are amazed at how soft and pretty she is and smells!! ive never had a problem with dish soap, i think it works better than doggie sham, poo and deff. smells batter!! but kacy is also outside with my kida slot and they like to bury her in the sand and she just lays there licks theam and lets theam do it, so the dish soap get all the dirt!!! dont you guys just love it when your babies come up and lay their head inyour lap and just look up at you with those eyes?!!! i love my puppy!!!! Awww Benny! I also use Dawn, especially on puppies that are too young to have advantage, it works really well and makes the white really pearlly lookin and the silver on my schnauers turns almost blue! I follow with crazy dog pina colada deodorant so they smell good enough to eat! http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=3738826&uid=1935527 [This message has been edited by pitzerlover (edited 03-19-2004).] IP: Logged |

I don't know if this is the case or not, but it probably just severly dried your dogs skin out. I do know that people sometimes use Dawn on their cars to strip away EVERYTHING before waxing/polishing. And even them, it is only recommended on a once or twice a year basis. That stuff is pretty harsh! So, it porobably dried out and irritaded the heck out of the poor dogs skin. Try a fragrance free moisturizer/lotion/conditioner/etc on him to help. ------------------ IP: Logged |
