Male Puppies Lifting Their Leg

At what age does a male puppy usually start lifting his leg to use the bathroom? My shihpoo is only four months old and is doing this. I'm just curious if this is normal for his age or if it is because he sees my mother's dog doing it and is mimicking. He doesn't lift his leg to pee against anything, he just lifts it when he needs to go.

My puppy is almost 11 months old and he still squats--although I'm told he may yet surprise us by lifting his leg. He doesn't have anyone to imitate, so maybe he just hasn't figured it out! (We did have him neutered at exactly four months old, that may have made a difference too.)

My yorkie is 6 years old and still squats.

The only times I've ever seen him lift is when my uncle visits and his dog uses his pee pad and Rocky will lift to mark it after. He's never seen my uncles dog do it (Otto doesn't play well with other dogs so they don't get to be together) but it could be immitation or just instinct.

My male shihpoo (2 yrs old) does both... he will squat in the grass, but lifts his leg at poles/trees/etc. He didnt start lifting his leg until he was around 6 months old tho.... it started when we went for walks more often for potty breaks, instead of just letting him out in the backyard (probably because there aren't any trees in the backyard).

My sister in laws puppy is 10weeks old and he is lifting his leg to pee as from today he is banned from the lounge because he decided her sofa was a good place to pee up hahahahah

It depends on the dog and how quickly they start to mature, some dogs never lift there leg to pee.

One if my Dams lifts her leg to pee i am sure she was supposed to be male lol

On Sunday I caught William in the process of lifting his leg to pee against my bed. Fortunately I caught him before anything came out and was able to carry him to the puppy pad. He is now lifting his leg about 50% of the time outside. I am hoping that the bed thing was an isolated incident and is not the sign of a pattern forming.

Teddy is 1 year old and he started lifting his leg when he was around 5 or 6 months old. He still sometimes squats on the grass depending on how badly he has to go and if he can't find anything to pee against
