Is it true that raw eggs help with making the coat shinny? Is it healthy to give a 3mo or dog a raw egg, and how often?

flaxseed oil is good. i buy a special blend of oils [includes flaxseed] made for dogs from my local health food shop. its made by melrose i think. im not sure if its available in the US.

I agree. A blend of oils including flax, fish and borage can really enhance the skin and coat. Also, a puppy's coat goes through a lot of changes (the uglies) for a year or two and may appear dull for a while.

I give Jasper raw egg and milk together, and after a few days she has a beutifull shiny coat.

  5. Hi! I was givin this recipe, but I have not tried it yet myself.

    1 cup cooked oatmill
    1 egg
    2 TBL. mayonaise
1/4 cup pure virgin olive oil
    1 tsp. fresh ground lavender

Mix all ingredients well, soak coat with warm water, coat intire coat as close to the skin as possible, let sit 5 min. then rinse.

    Good luck!
P.S. You might want to switch the olive oil with flaxseed oil, that's what I will do when I get around to trying this.

Susan - As I was reading down the ingredients I was thinking 'wonder what lavender will taste like?' I really thought you fed it to the pooch

But to answer the question, yeah, eggs are great for their coats, even the shell, which is actually the 'best' bit. You can grind it down into a powder and sprinkle it on their food if they don't like eating the egg, altho I've yet to meet a dog who doesn't like them :)

  7. YUK! I don't think they would want to EAT it   Too funny!

slimdoby, I do not give my dogs raw eggs. I will give them a hard boiled egg once in a while.
Cooked eggs are high in protein and make an excellent treat, raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which can deplete your dog of biotin, one of the B vitamins. Since your have a puppy, biotin is essential to your dog’s growth and coat health. And don't forget, raw eggs are often contaminated with bacteria, such as salmonella, and you could end up giving your dog food poisoning in addition to biotin deficiency.
    Symptoms Of Biotin Depletion:
    Hair loss
    Weakness
    Growth retardation
    Skeleton deformity

What are you feeding your puppy? If you are using a good nutrient pet food, it will help. Also, make sure you brush your dog everyday.
