My cat steps on her poop! HELP!

I have a problem with my 7 month old kitten. When she pee's she's fine, squats and goes. But when she poops, she tends to dig a huge hole in a corner, then goes on a total other side of the litter box. When she does this, she frequently steps on it and starts throwing litter over it. By that time, the damage has been done and I have to keep washing her paws. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

 

how big is her litter box?
i had to go and get Max a bigger box last week because he wasnt able to cover his poop without stepping on it. now with the bigger box, he covers it much faster. cuz before, it would take him few mins trying to cover it. but now he could go around it and cover it, cuz of the bigger space.

 

definately get a bigger litter box, even if the one you already have looks like its big enough. some cats just dont do well with regular sized litter trays.

well, I tried that. Her box isnt HUGE, but its about 4 feet long by two feet wide. She's only 6 months and weighs about 5 lbs.

 

How many cats do you have? Have you recently acquired her? Are there new changes in her routine? What food/s are you feeding her?

3 of my cats did the same thing. The first kitten just didn't know how to use the litter so we taught her how to cover up everytime she goes and the problem resolved after a while. The second kitten just didn't like the holes she dug so she keeps digging multiple holes until she can't hold it in anymore and goes and misses and steps on her poop. :shock: She outgrew that soon as well. The 3rd cat had problems digging and covering too after we moved to a new place. We think he was stressed and the low quality food I used to feed him wasn't helping him. Eventually, he also outgrew the problem. I used to stand with the scooper and cover it up for them as soon as I knew they were going. It was no fun giving them baths. :mrgreen: HTH
