My heater is broken that I recieved for my 55gal it was a 300w. I am thinking of maybe going with a submersable (sp?) heater? should I use 1-300w or 2-150w placed on opposite ends? I am going to have a African cichlid tank. All I need to continue is the heater the rest of the decorations and what not are in.

300 watts worth of heaters might be a bit much.

Two 100 - 150 watt heaters would be ideal. Otherwise a single 200 watt should be sufficient unless the room the tank is in is really cold. I have a 200 watt ViaAqua Titanium heater in my 55 and it does just fine.

I ended up with a 250watt and I think it shall suffice. It's a marineland stealth I believe. I know its outside is plastic so it's shatter proof...
