I have a 10 week old kitten that I got from KittyResQ. He came with what seemed to have been a scab on his tail that was healing. But just recently a whole patch of fur from his tail came off along with the skin. The new skin underneath is white and flakey. When I checked further, I noticed on his hind leg he had the same kind of scabby patch, so i tugged at the hair a bit and the whole thing came off in a circle. Its not bleeding though, its just coming off in patches.

I'm taking him to the vet, but what is this? What could it be? This is the first cat i have!!!

are there any apparent wounds under the fur that comes off? I wonder if they are abcesses wounds.
A vet is a good choice - ringworm causes fur loss although I don't know if it falls off in patches like that.
Please let us know what the vet says - helps us to all learn when people share
Best of luck for your kitten

Sounds like it could be any number of skin infections from flea allergies to mites to being allergic to something else like alopecia aretta.

Very good of you to take your new bundle of fur to the vet. Whatever it is, i'm sure the vet will be able to help you :)

Could be ringworm (which is actually a fungal infection, not a worm). Some ringworm will glow bright green under a blacklight. If it is ringworm, I'd get some meds from the vet asap and also look over the house and your whole family really, really well with the black light. It is highly contageous and not fun to have (I got it about a month ago from a stray cat and I'm just now getting over it).

My cat is having the same problem, except he's almost 12 and strictly indoor. Since your cat is soo young, I would take him back to the vet.

With mine, this happens every yr, in summertime, but I still would Love some suggestions!! There are just Tufts of orange hair, all over the house and he is going bald in some spots.. but I can't afford to take him in.

I'm trying to give him more oil in his diet and brushing plays a big part, of helping him keep healthy. He just has really really dry skin!!

He's always had what i call "hotspots", just places, that are very sensitive..

Kittens, esp rescue ones, could have ringworm, or any kind of parasite.

Ask your vet, if your kitten is old enough, for brewers yeast, you only want to give them a tad, a pinch.. but it helps keeps fleas away and is really good for cats!

My dog had those 'hot spots' all the time. Just had to keep them clean watered down peroxide once and awhile and i believe there was an ointment as well or was it just vaseline....was awhile ago. They were a pain :( and gross.
