getting rid of ear mites

I have recently bought "Four Paws" ear mite remedy for my 2 year old and 6 month old. I used it 3 days ago and when taking Chica, my 6 month old, to the vet to be spayed, the vets office called and told me she had ear mites. I told thei assistant what I was using and she treated me stupid. I am using the instructions on the back of the bottle, so if it isn't working...what other product can I use. Maybe I am doing it all wrong. ANy advice? :?:

I'd probably just use what the vet recommended. I don't know about mite medicine, but I do know that with the wormers it's just a waste of time to get the stuff over-the-counter. Much better to just go ahead and get the right stuff the first time.

And kudos to you for having your cat spayed! :y_the_best:

I will ask them tomorrow when I pick her up from the Vet. My older cat, Puss, doesn't seem to be bothered by his ears, so I will wait on treating him until talking to the vet.
    Thanks.

there is a product with Ivermectin in it that works well on ear mites but it's by vet only.
It can take awhile for them to go completely away - they are tough little critters.
After treatment you might want to do an ear swab, after a few weeks if she has any mite dirt in her ears, to make sure the treatment has worked.

How do I do an ear swab? Is that something that only the vet can do?
What do I look for in their ears to be alerted that mites are in there? :?:

I wish I could remember what med my military vet uses. It generally works with 1 or 2 treatments (if it takes 2 treatments, they can be done a week apart).

it was probably the Ivermectin...that is a 2-treatment program.
To swab a cat's ear simply take a q-tip and gently (and not down too far) clean out the dirt you see in the ear - don't go any deeper than you can see. With ear mites you'll get lots of "dirt" out of there. I put in the swab in a baggie and take that to the vets. I've had lots of fosters with ear mites and you can usually tell that's what it is - the dirt (not dirt but ear mite poop) and the cat scratches at its ears a lot, maybe shakes its head.
My vet also has me clean the ears out with a cotton ball dampened with mineral oil, some use simply water. Just get the cottonball damp and clean out the ear with it. Get as much of the dirt off as you can.

First, if the vets asst, treated you badly, I'd make sure I'd inform the vet of that!! or change vets!!

No one should treat you stupidly, no ? is dumb.

I'm looking for some herbal remedies..

I do use mineral oil, on Q tips, sometimes w/ aloe vera.. thats supposed to kill the mites.. but I need something more..

    any other Natural idea's??

The vet called me at work to discuss Chica and to check on her. I did discuss that his assistants were rude and disrespectful. He told me that he was sorry and would talk to them.
Chica is much better this evening than she was last night. SHe loves empty pop boxes and I had one on the floor next to the garbage, when she darted in and out....slowly but she managed.
My older cat Puss is still hissing, but not as much. This evening I caught him licking her head and ear and so I gave him a treat and told him what a good boy he was. Not 20 minutes later and he was hissing at her again.
Chica seems to be fine and bouncing back...slowly, but she's getting there...No pain meds for her I think. I feel she is okay and she acts like it.
I am to give her-her ear mites drops tonight and am not looking forward to it, with her belly sore and stomach still upset (I am hoping not). So I'll be as careful as I can.
