who do I get 2 cats to like each other?

I am having problems getting my 4 year old alpha female to accept our new little bundle of joy who is also female. I have tried brushing the older one then the little one hoping her own sent would help. the older one just growls and hisses at her and the kitten really wants to check the older one out thank goodness she hasn't gotten to close.

I also have tried sitting on the floor with the older one and letting her watch the kitten that didn't work out so well for me or her. I still give her all the attention she is use to.

Any advise would be greatly helpfull

Hi. I can understand your problem! I've always had a multi-cat household with new arrivals coming frequently! All I can say is it takes time for an established cat to accept a newcomer. I've had the same problem, and kittens seem to be more scary for some reason! But if you keep an eye on their interaction, the older cat will eventually accept the kitten. Just don't try to force them together! Good luck!

 

it can take sometime...try putting a little dab of vanilla extract at the base of both cats' tails. The scent of the extract is so strong they smell alike.
But it still might take some time - especially with 2 females.

 

It takes time and a lot of patience on your part. How are the two getting along now? Our Pumpkin, the resident grouch took 2 years to get used to any newbies. Now they can mingle quite well but that's an extreme. Monty takes to any newbies immediately. Milo takes a couple of weeks to warm up to newbies. I haven't tried any yet with Rene. :mrgreen:

 

Thanks for the advice Missy seems to be settling down but not enough to be friends. But I guess time will tell.

Fifteen years ago when we went through this, we got a female kitten when our male was 5 months old. There was a lot of hissing and eerie growling nosies and some swatting and stuff, but they worked it out after a week or two and became the best of friends. We pretty much just left them alone if I remember correctly, but memory may fail or we may have just been lucky.
