10.5 week old Shih-poo and food choice

are there any opinions on Hill's persciption diets? I live in Ontario Canada and am looking for a premium puppy food for our new addition and am lost-there are so many opinions on what is good-too much protein--too much filler etc. Our vet carries the Hill's brand and was wondering if this is a good choice? You'll probably find that most vets will push the Hill's brand (especially Science Diet - they get paid to promote it).

I feed my 7 year old Yorkie and 5 month old Bichon puppy Nutro Natural Choice. I switched my Yorkie over nearly a year ago from Eukanuba because he's starting to get up there in years and Nutro has glucosamine in it. I've noticed an improvement in his coat and stool.

The Nurto puppy formula contains no wheat (wheat is high on the food allergy scale).

Recently I've noticed that the Pet Value stores (should be able to find one of those fairly easily) are starting to carry very good brands like Nutro, Innova, California Naturals, Natural Balance and Eagle Pack. You may want to check those out.

 

i just replied about this on your other thread too...but wanted to comment that my Bailey started out on Nutro also. I thought it was very good and he did really well.... his coat has always been super soft and shiny too I still think Natural Balance is great.

 

I hate to bad mouth any product, so i won't. But there are far better choices for your furbaby. Few things about food: Dogs are carnivours, so the first THREE ingredients should be meat. Meat called by name is a higher quality than meat byproducts. Byproducts are higher quality than meat meal. In the USA, ingredients MUST be in order of quantity. However, this can be confusing, since you can list cheap fillers by several different names, each with a small percentage, but if you add them together, will outweigh the good ingredients. SO, if you don't understand the label easilly, try another brand. We are currently feeding our pomeranians Innova large bites, so they have clean teeth. They also have solid stools, and no diarrhea. Good for pups and adults. Other good brands (although i don't use them) California Natural, Diamond, Royal Canin, and a plethora of others. But DO your homework, and see what is available in your area. A dog as small as yours, you can get gold plated food. I currently buy ONE 8 pound bag of Innova a month, for 14$ USD. And that is for four pommies. So that gives you an idea as to cost. But as i say, do your homework.
