my kitten poos frequently

I have a new baby kitten. I will start by saying I have had cats all my life and I am 53 so that's a lot of cats. But I am honestly more confused then ever. There is so much conflicting advise I am confused.
WE got our kitty from a local feed store where people bring them in and you can take them for free, so you don't have a lot of history. My daughter (she's 29) brought him home after we had to have our 5 month old kitten put to sleep due to a heart murmur. It became obvious when she brought him home he was young. Too young to be given away, we are guessing maybe 4 weeks, his eyes were still blue and he only weighed 15 oz. We have had him a week and a half and hes up to 1.5 lbs now. So he is doing well. My question is with food though. I wanted to give him a good balanced diet. We started giving evap milk and water in a baby bottle to help him through weaning. we have switched to KMR first step. I soaked Purina one kitten food in water for him, dry food was too hard for him to chew. I give him Natural Balance canned food. He has occasional chopped boiled chicken breast. He is eating dried food better now which I top with a spoon of jarred baby meat. My problem is he is using his litter box a lot pooing frequently. It's not really diarrhea, but it's not really solid either. Not a large amount each time. I figure I am bombarding his system, since he is so young his tummy may not be mature enough to handle something I am giving him. Any suggestions what would be best for him? he is active and playful, just poos a lot. How often do baby kittens poo? And any ideas on firming him up. Thanks all

 

Hi and welcome to Auspet. It sounds like you are doing a good job taking care of this kitten. After kittens are four or more weeks old you can wean them off of KMR/formula. I would buy some good quality soft cat food and just mix a tiny amount of KMR in it. Slowly add less and less KMR and after about 1-2 weeks the kitten should be eating just quality soft food and hard food if it wants.

By quality food, I mean the first ingredient on the label is some kind of meat. Not meat by products, corn or other fillers. For example the first ingredients could be: chicken, or beef, or salmon and so on.

It's best to stick to one food and not switch foods. I personally feed my cats Wellness hard and soft foods. This particular food would firm up your kittens stools, as it contains stool firming vegetables. But the truth is kittens poop a lot! When I had kittens they were pooping machines.

 

I have him on natural balance, I feed my other two cats that, it has no corn fillers and meat is definitely the number one ingredient. He eats it really well, but I give in when he acts a little picky and I give him chicken. I have him eating purina one kitten food and I add a little baby meat on top to entice him to eat it better. he started pooing more often in the past few days and its not as firm as it was before. I wondered if maybe any of these items could have caused it. I will get some wellness canned see how he does with that. Thank you
