My cats are ill

Hi all,

I am new here, just posting because of concern about my two cats. Both have thrown up today, and the younger one (1.5 years) just had diarhea too. How long do you usually wait to take them to a vet? I normally wouldn't worry yet, but the fact that they both are sick makes me a little concerned.

I would appreciate any advice.

I wouldn't wait too long to take your kitties to the vet. Prolonged vomiting plus diarrhea=dehydration. It could be a number of things causing it. Perhaps they ate something bad, a dead animal, poisonous plant, cleaner, who knows? Have you changed their normal food at all? What does the vomit look like? Any strange colors or objects in it? Also this is sometimes caused by parasites. Excessive worm infestations will often cause vomiting and diarrhea, but usually you will see the worms when this is the case. If you wait more than a couple of days and they are still vomiting with bad diarrhea, dehydration can just make matters worse, whatever the problem is. I would try to think of any changes or possibilities as to the cause and then call the vet for an appointment.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

I should have specified that they are indoor cats, so most of the worm type stuff is unlikely. The vomit was basically just food (ew) and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary in it. They both seem ok right now, this is the time they sleep anyway. The older one has had some food and drink and I will keep an eye on the other one.

I had some flowers in the bathtub (don't ask, it the only place I could put them that wouldn't cause a problem if the cats knocked them over as they have done more than once). I wonder if they both took a few bites of them...They are thrown away now just in case.

If there are any more 'episodes' I will call the vet in the morning.

Agree with whats been said, dehydration is the danger, especially with vomiting AND the runs, poor little tackers. I would take them to the vet ASAP...Hope they are ok, let us know how things are going with them..

Hi all,

I took Jack to the vet yesterday and they said he was fine, he wasn't dehyrdrated or anything (he kept drinking throughout). He stopped throwing up yesterday. Holly has been fine for a couple of days now. Now though, Jack is freaking out, trying to run away from his butt (if that makes sense) and licking at it as if he is in pain. He is acting realllly weird...

The problem is, I have my lisencing exam for Real estate tomorrow, and I need to study...what bad timing! Ahhhh!!!!!

I might have my boyfriend (who can't touch cats due to allergies) bring him to the vet again if this continues.

Thanks for your concern everyone. Has anyone ever had this kind of behavior in their cats?

 

when I first got my Zeus he had some "dire rear" issues caused from diet (any fish foods set him off) and he'd try to get away from his own butt. I used unscented baby wipes to help soothe his back end. He pooped so much his little butt would bleed. Luckily it was an easy fix with his diet.
Good luck w/your r.e. exam. I'm not a realtor but have worked in real estate for the past 7 years.

My kitties have bitten at their rear area and then ran around like trying to get away. They had fleas. That might be a possibility. Just a guess, though. I hope Jack will be okay.

We'd all love to see pics of your furbabies if you have any. :m7: My son was allergic to the kitties when he was born. He used to get hives upon cat fur/dander contact and after 2 1/2 years, he became allergy free. There's hope for your boyfriend. :mrgreen:

 

Hi, and welcome to the forum I hope there's nothing wrong with your cats, and that they are fine now. I live with a friend of miene, and she is allergic to cats. I was adviced to try something called Petal Cleanse. It's a liquid you "soak" your cat(s) coat in once a week, it is supposed to remove the substances that can cause allergic reactions in humans. I don't know if it works yet, because in cases with airborne allergy, which she has, you have to wait three weeks to see the results. But anyone with contact allergies can handle the animal immediately after it has been cleansed with Petal Cleanse. Maybe you should give it a try, if you haven't already
