New with a question about wetting the bed...

Hello, I am new here and have been lurking around for awhile. But I actually have a question. My fourteen month old Cocker Spaniel has recently (within the past two months) started wetting the bed while sleeping. She doesn't do it everytime that she sleeps, only when it seems she has been sleeping for an hour or longer. My question is, is this normal, or should I take her to the vet? I thought maybe I would ask you guys here before making a vet appointment, incase it is just something she will grow out of, kinda like children do. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

 

Hi trublnde, welocme to the boards, there is some lovely people in here that are very very helpful and caring..
I would take her to the vet just incase she has a small UTI.
If she has just started doind this, something might be upsetting her, or she may have bladder problems aswell, in that she cant hold it in when shes relaxed an un-aware..
Best bet is to get her checked over by a vet, especially if it continues, you dont want it to get worse if she has got bladder problems...

 

Thanks, I think I will make an appointment for her tomorrow. She was actually just sitting in my boyfriends lap and she peed on him which is weird because she hasn't done that since she was a newborn, and she wasn't that relaxed.

 

Mmmm thats really strange hey.. Was she excited, as some dogs can wee when they are excited, or they can also wee when they are afraid too, thats why I though maybe something was frightening her in her bed???She may have bladder problems, although she is young and it occures mostly in older dogs with age, it can happen.

I baby sitted a cocker once, and he was the same way. would pee in his bed and if he got excited. and Im not talking about just a little dribble. I mean a FULL blown Pee.

I was afraid of a UTI so i took him in,and they said no, Cockers tend to have weak bladders.

But I would definately have it checked.

 

I didn't know that Cockers had weak bladders. I know that she has excited peeing problems. But she has lived with me and my boyfriend since we got her. She has somewhat grown out of it and only does it when people first come in the door. But this time she was sitting on his lap. I got her a vet appointment for today, I will let you all know how it goes.

Ok, so I just got back from the vet and they are doing a urinary analysis and they put her on two different meds. An antibiotic and something to help tighten her sphincter. We will hopefully know tomorrow what is wrong.

My cousin's had a Beagle that did that and it was a problem with her muscles...she was really young so it was odd but meds fixed her right up... I bet that's what it is with your Cocker... Do let us know and welcome to the board!

I got a call from the vet today, they said that no bacteria was found in her urine sample so they don't think it is a bladder infection. However, they are keeping her on antibiotics just in case and they said if she doesn't stop leaking after about a wekk on the other meds which tighten her muscles, the are going to refer her to a specialist because her ureters (tubes which connect the kidneys and the bladders) could be connected to her vaginal walls instead of her bladder. I guess it is some rare disorder which doesn't show up until about a year old and the doctor hasn't ever seen it before. Hopefully we will know within a week.
