Pom uglies too ugly?

Hi! I'm brand new to the forum. My name is Emily and I have a question!

I have a 5 month old female pomeranian named Choxie. She is the smartest little dog I have ever met! She learned how to sit, lay down, and give me "paw" (a high five) at 3 months. Now she knows how to roll over. Sorry, I just thought I would share!

Choxie has lost a lot of hair, and I'm worried it is too much. How "ugly" should she get? I mean, she looks like a shorthaired dog with long guard hairs. I have yet to see a pic on the searches I've done that look like her.

I'm concerned that she wont get fluffy enough, or that something is wrong. She is my first Pom and no one has them around here, so I'm not familiar with what this stage should look like  . If it helps any, she had a full coated father and a foxy mother, and I registered her as a orange sable with a black mask. If you could even just post pics of the "ugliest" poms, because I can't post pics yet lol, that would be awesome. Thank you for your time!

It's possible she's just going through a coat change, from puppy to adult coat. They can look pretty moth eaten when this happens. If she doesn't have any completely bald spots and isn't scratching, I'd wait it out a few weeks and see if she doesn't start to look better.

If the hair loss is patchy or there are spots that are completely bald, or if she's scratching, have your vet check her. She could have demodectic mange. Don't worry about yourself, you can't catch it. But she may need treatment to get rid of the mites that are causing the hair loss.

We got our dog when he was going through the uglies and now he is very fluffy.

Aww! What a cutie! Chox has nowhere near as much hair though... She doesn't have any spots and her skin is fine. I think I was bathing her too often. Once a week too much? I think I'll bathe her a lot less. Her coat is already getting a little thicker. Thanks for the help!

Bathing once a week isn't too often if you're using a mild shampoo and a little conditioner. The most important thing to remember about bathing is rinsing. Even a little shampoo residue will cause itching and scratching. Scratching leads to coat damage. But if she's dirty, bathe her.

It's also true that some dogs just don't have as much coat as others. Look at the Poms in dog shows. They look like animated fluff balls. The average pet Pom has about half that amount of coat.

Along with genetics, diet plays a HUGE roll in coat condition. Feed her a top quality diet to get a top quality coat.

    ~Hello~

~Our Pom Dallas is double coated and even during his puppy uglies he still had alot of hair BUT my friends Pom who doesnt have double coated parents almost looked like a Chihuahua during her uglies. Poms do the puppy uglies and during that time they almost look like mixed dogs or shaved even. I have seen some be almost completely short haired and others who didnt lose much hair at all. I would say think about the parents and their coats. That is about what yours should look like when he finally gets his adult coat back in. Our Dallas didnt get his full coat in until around 1 1/2 years old and then he just POOFED out!~
