Help! I am a wreck!!!!

I am writing because I need some support!!! I took my cat Farfel to the vet last Wednesday because he was acting sluggish, would find hiding places to sleep (very unlike him) and her breath was really bad. The vet noticed her kidney was enlarged so she spent the night at the vet's office to run some tests. The next day, the vet told me that she had a raging UTI, one of the worst they have ever seen and her creatnine and BUN levels were through the roof. This was causing her kidneys to fail. I was sick when I heard this!!! I haven't stopped crying since! They are pumping her full of fluids because she was very dehydrated and giving her antibiotics through IV. They are doing an ultrasound on Monday to check for lymphoma. I am praying that there is no lymphoma and that the cause of the enlarged kidneys is the UTI. I have gone to visit Farfel everyday and on Saturday, she actually looked better than on Friday and she cried when she saw me!!! She also cried when I left which killed me. Any supportive words or thoughts would really help me during this very hard time. I had to put my dog to sleep last October due to cancer and I don't think I can deal with that again. My Farfy doesn't deserve this.....she is only 2 1/2!!!!!

    Thanks for listening......

    Hi, and welcome :)

I'm sorry to hear what you and your cat are going through... It must be really hard seeing your baby that ill, but at least you're doing everything you can for her. And even though it's tough leaving her at the vet, it's her only chance of getting better, so just hang in there. I really hope she gets better soon. Do you have any pictures to share? :)

    Bente,

Thank you for the kind words. I would like to share some photos of my little baby, but I can't figure out how to do it!!!

One thing that Farfel has going for him is he's only 2 1/2 years old. The odds are always better for a younger cat.

Rest assure that cats are remarkable healers. My cat Buddy had a URI that turned into pneumonia, fatty liver disease, and kidney failure all at one time. Nobody held out much hope on him but me. After 3 months of round the clock force feedings and fluids, Buddy finally made a full recovery to everyone's surprise. I did a lot of praying and searching the internet for herbal remedies or anything that would cure my guy and get him to start eating again. Sometimes it even felt like I was being cruel to him forcing meds and food down him all the time. But it paid off. Buddy is also 8 yrs old. I figured he has half his life left to live.

Just don't let anyone discourage you. I wish you all the best and feel positive that Farfel will make a full recovery

Hi and welcome to Auspet. Farfel is in good hands and will get better. You did the right thing by taking him to the vet. I know it's hard knowing that he is upset by being there, but it is for his own good. I'm sorry you lost your dog to cancer. That must have been really tough. :(

Best of luck with your kitty. It sounds like your kitty is in good hands and will come out of it fine. Please keep us posted on what is happening.

My daughter's kitty is pretty sick right now and is on antibiotics. I keep hoping she will be okay, too. I know who upsetting it can be.

    Some very sad news....

Thanks everybody for your kind words and support. We lost our baby this morning. He had been on fluids and antibiotics for 5 days and only got worse. Our vet sent us to a specialist an hour away for a second opinion and their opinion was that they could maybe make him feel better for a while, but he couldn't be cured. His kidneys were too bad. He was so sick and miserable he just laid in my arms with not much reaction. The specialist said she had never seen an animal be on fluids for that long and get worse. We ended up taking him home with us last night and spent our last night with him. He was not the Farfel we knew.......I was so angry that he was taken away so quickly. My husband and I are both devastated. I can't believe he is gone from our lives. We will love him always and forever.

As crazy as this may sound, Farfel was the heart of our family. We don't have any kids, so he was our baby. We have 2 outdoor cats and a dog who we love, but Farfel was special, in a way I can't explain. He will always be our baby. I MISS HIM SOOOOO MUCH!!!

On the way home with him last night, we saw a rainbow....maybe the Rainbow Bridge?

Oh, I'm so sorry! That is just too soon to loose a beloved pet. You don't sound crazy at all having Farfel being the center of the family. I know all to well what you're saying. It's important that you and your Husband take time to grieve.

So this is where we part, My Friend,
and you'll run on, around the bend,
gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.

I will go on, I'll find the strength,
life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
share one last look, before I grieve.

There are others, that much is true,
but they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
will remember well all you've taught.

Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
the fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
take with you this...I loved you best

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose a furbaby, young or old - they are never with us long enough.
