an infected uterus. Last night she took her to the amimal ER, and they did an ultrasound. They determined that her uterus was infected and she needs to be spayed. Then they told her it would be $2200 to do the surgery. Is there something more to this then a regular spaying or is it because it was the ER. My sister just had her dog spayed and it was only $67. She is taking her to the Animal Humaine today because they have low cost Vet care for low income and Seniors.

the cost is higher for her care will be more. She has pyrometria and will require antibiotics. This is a lifethreatening disease she has.
I was at my vet's office one day when he just completed an emergency spay on a 10 year old sheepdog who had this. The dog's uterus should have been roughly the size of the vet's thumb but what he removed was longer than his arm and full of infection. Many dogs don't survive this disease.
It would only stand to reason it would cost more than the average spay cause not only are they spaying but they are also working on saving the dog's life. It's not to be taken lightly at all

Yeah that is exactly what it was. She had surgery today and is home doing as well as expected after that experiance. Animal Humane couldn't take her till Friday so I called the Vet we take our kitty Nitro to and he took her in this morning, and decided he needed to do surgery right away. He did it during his lunch hour because that was the only time he could fit her in. He said she might not have made until Friday as her uterus was about the size of a softball. 8)

I'm glad she's doing okay. It's one of the reason why spaying is so important if someone isn't going to breed a dog. But at least your mother got her done quickly and saved her life.

I agree, Pyometria is nothing to wait or be light hearted about. It can kill a female with in days, alot of times its too late by the time you recognize signs that something is wrong.

Glad to hear she's doing well!

I agree with everyone pyometra is a life threatening condition and spaying is the only option to save the dog.

There is 2 kinds of pyometra open and closed, Open is when the pus starts leaking from her vulva and closed is where there is no outward signs.

Caught early enough sometimes strong antibiotics can be given to try and clear it up but most vets prefer to takethe safer option and spay.

Glad she is doing better and she should make a full recovery and be a much better dog for not having to deal with heats and hormones hahaha.
