First off hello to everyone! *waves* And now to the question: I was leaning towards changing my dogs' food to Nutro Ultra or Max but I read in another forum that this is not a very good brand. I was also thinking about Wellness. What do you think is a good food for my dogs. I have small dogs about 10 lbs each (shih tzu/poodle mix). They are fairly active, we walk for an hour or so a day. The people who had them before me fed them Purina Puppy Chow. Is this a good brand/should I just stick with this? Any input will be very much appreciated!

Nutro is a good brand...are you in US or UK?
If US then IMO the best dog food there is APD by Breeders Choice, in UK Oscars.

You did not say how old your pups were but If they are older than six months I would not feed them puppy chow any more. My two boys do very well on Natural Choice Lite by Nutro. I do give them supplimental fish oil with their evening meal and twice a week they each get a raw egg, shell and all. I just crack one in their bowl and they love them. Also, once a week I split a can of sardines between them over their kibble.

I am in the US and they are 6 months and 1 year. So I should switch them to adult already even the 6 months old? Thank you for the response guys! I wil look into that APD brand. Thanks again!

I believe it's OK to make the switch. Puppy chow is loaded with calories for first growth.
As with any change in food however, do it gradually over a one or two week period. Start mixing in a bit of the new food with their old food then every day increase the new a bit and decrease the old.

For small brands I would go with the APD. Its a fairly decent food.

I personally feed my big guys Proplan giant breed formula.

My boxer/lab is on Nutro Natural Choice lamb and oatmeal for sensitive stomachs. He loves it and since it is a good premium food I can actually feed him less because his body absorbs most of it and he poops less too!!! Actually all of my animals are on Nutro. I used to work in many pet stores and we did tests on all of them and they were one of the better ones. My cats are on nutro max.

my dog eats Nutro canned food also and as stated her deposits are smaller.
I do, however, have to feed her a nasty dry food as she has IBS and needs a food higher in fiber. I don't like to talk about it but since putting her on the lower quality dry food, with higher fiber, she hasn't had an IBS episode which is a good thing.
I add dry to her wet food so it's not like she's eating it 100%.
Molly prefers the Nutro canned food. AFter the food scare (which she got caught up in) I tried all kinds and once this came back onto the market she was a happy dog again

Thank you again everyone for your response. Well I called the local pet food store yesterday and he recomended California Naturals. What do you guys think of this brand?

Well I took the plunge and bought a 20 lbs bag of California Naturals... :) ! I started their transistion last Friday and im planning to do it in a week. I noticed that even in that short time, their coats look a little shinnier and my 6 month old's skin looks better, almost no flakes at all. But then again it is only 5 days since I changed their food. I will update you later if anything changes..hopefully everything for the better.

DukesDad I tried the raw egg thing and they gobbled everything up so quick I dont even think they came up for air at all...haha. I plan on doing this once a week for them. Havent tried the sardines yet ...but I do mix their food with California Natural canned food every other day.

Oh yeah and I got the Lamb and Rice Small Bites one...like it so far :y_the_best: !

Well then I have been feeding my babies California Natural Lamb Meal and Rice. Their skin and coat looks super excellent in the short time that they have been eating it. Their dandruff is also gone. I thought it was weird that they get danrfuff. Also they have twice the energy too I'm not sure yet if I should be happy about this yet. Hahaha! Where is everybody anyway. I have been checking in everyday and no one has posted anything. I guess I'm the only one without a life.

Glad to hear they are doing so well!!!

Its amazing what change in diet can do for them. Most results won't show until at least 30 days of being fed.

When I rescued Buster he was on purina chow his skin was horrible!! Within a week of being on Nutro natural choice sensitive stomachs he looked VERY different his skin was less cracked and dry, his coat was starting to get softer it was incredible. he also went from having large waste to much smaller deposits....

What a great thing good diets can do for our animals!!

I noticed that their poop is really small and that it is very dry. I'm taking it as a good thing because at least I have a lot less to clean up. Also I really think that they love it. They gobble everything up and I also love it because its making my babies look real pretty and healthy too ofcourse. California Natural is a really good food. Thanks for your input guys!

that is true, the dog food is not loaded up fillers that creates bib poops and runny to boot.
