We said our final good-byes to Monty this morning. He stopped eating and drinking and we knew it was time for him to go. We made an appointment with the vet and had him put to sleep in our presence. Andrew (6) took it the hardest. He cried long and hard. Lisa (3) understands that he's going to cat heaven and was ok with it. He was the best kitty we've ever had, so gentle and loving. He never hunted any creatures save for flies and spiders. We miss him.

    So sorry Vene,
Monty had a wonderful life with a loving family!!!! You did all that you could to make him happy, and promised the most caring thoughtful thing we can do for our fur babies in the end!!! He is happy and healthy now waiting to be re-united with you when its time. And what a joyous re-union that will be.

I am so sorry! All the best to you and your family during this sad time. That's the unfortunate side effect of having these wonderful pets in our lives: there comes a time when we have to say good bye. RIP Monty.

Vene I am so sorry for your loss. I'm sorry too for your kiddies. I remember losing a fur animal when I was Andrew's age. It was really hard and I certainly never forgot that day. Did you read them the rainbow bridge poem? It won't bring him back, but it's nice to think we will see them again. Maybe it will comfort them just a little bit? Maybe you could have a little service for him in your yard? Like take the kids to a nursery and plant a little tree in his memory? Or get a little statue or anything you feel would be fitting? It's going to take time for the sadness to go away. It's just so tough to lose a fur animal that we love so much. I'm going to miss Monte too. Hang in there.

bear hugs vene.....it's the worse part of being pet people. Having to deal with them aging and going to the Bridge.
You did the ultimate kindness for Monty - letting him go in peace and dignity.
You know you have huge huge hugs from me

It is never easy to let one of our fur babies go!! I've done it many times and they only thing that helps is the knowledge that I did everything I could for them and gave them the best life possible!!! I dread the day that I have to make that decision with my beloved babies!!!!
My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. I keep mementos and have put together photo colleges for my past babies. they are forever in my heart and memories!!

Thank you for the kind words everyone. They have helped me in these past few days.

Andrew won't let any of us use the M (Monty) word yet. He says it makes him cry. We read to him a bereavement book for children that our vet gave us when Pumpkin died in 2007. It has helped prepare him for Monty's passing. I plan to read to him the Rainbow Bridge poem but when he's in a better frame of mind. He still remembers Pumpkin's passing.

Milo is doing well. We let him see Monty for one last time and he was okay with it.

I won't feel any closure for Monty until he is buried along with Pumpkin and Vene in our backyard. The ground is still frozen. I think I may be able to dig a hole either tomorrow or the day after. We will have a memorial service for Monty and for the girls as well.

It gets a little better and sometimes worse. Every time our furbabies leave us, I feel like a part of me has been taken away. I will treasure the memories we've shared and the time we've spent together.

We had a rare 60 degrees on 2/10 and Monty enjoyed the fresh air.

Thank you so much Sunset, for your support.

We buried Monty in our yard yesterday afternoon. It was 46 and sunny. The kids plucked some flowers from our sunroom and we scattered them over Monty's casket. We petted him one last time and laid him to rest. We finally got our closure. We looked for a cat statue in the stores right afterwards but we coudn't find one. I'm sure we'll find one soon.

We love you Monty. Til we meet again.

Sounds like you had a nice send-off. How's Andrew doing?

Andrew is doing much better, thanks for asking, Halaroo. I've been telling him great stories about Monty. One time Monty jumped up on the kitchen counter to eat a plateful of scrambled eggs. I yelled no, Monty got startled and chopped the plate in half, lol. I got some laughes out of Andrew. He liked the Karate Monty story. Andrew's favorite was napping with Monty and playing fishing pole together.

If any of you have stories and/or pictures of your beloved pets, please post them here. I'd love to read all about them.

Hi Vene. I'm so sorry this has been so hard on all of you. :( It's good you had a little service for him. I feel so bad for Andrew. It's so hard to be a little guy and lose your pal. :( He was such a great cat. I miss him too.

Thank you so much Chessmind. I think it's much harder on the children sometimes than it is on big people when our beloved pets leave us. Andrew still won't talk much about Monty. Lisa will say she miss Vene, Pumpkin, and Monty out of the blue. They both understand that the trio is in a better place. The children are resilient. Their hearts will heal given time.

Vene, I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how hard everyday must be. I'm sure Monty is still watching everything along with Vene. I'm in a children's lit class and I think these might help Andrew:
When a Pet Dies by Fred Rogers for children ages 4-8. Through this book, the infamous Mr. Rogers helps children understand the loss of a family pet. It helps them explore their feelings of sadness and loneliness.

The Tenth Good Thing About Barney by Judith Viorst for children older than 4 years old. In helping to deal with the death of his cat, the boy in this book makes a list of the 10 things he liked about him.

Literature can help a lot. I hope this helps.

Christina, I'm so happy to hear from you! *Hugs*

The Tenth Good Thing about Barney is the book the vet gave us in 2007. We read the book many times. I will look into the book When a Pet Dies. Thank you so much! You are a great help.

    Big hugs to you all!
