is it true about small dogs

i hear that small dogs (toys) have many medical problems due to their size. I wanted to get some feedback on that before I start looking at buying one.

    Thanks!

It's not necessarily true. I have a Yorkie that is going to be 11 years old this year and has never really had any major health problems, except for a few minor bouts with a stomach bug. My Bichon who will be 4 years old shortly has never had any health problems either.

If you look for a good breeder you should be able to get a relatively healthy small dog, especially if your breeder health tests their dogs prior to breeding and really cares more about the betterment of the breed and the puppies they produce than their bottom line. You generally should stay away from anyone advertising "teacup" puppies as these are generally very undersized puppies thay typically are loaded with health problems.

But definately do your research into any breed you may be contemplating. Some breeds can be more prone to certain conditions than others.

Small dogs like Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, Pekingese, and Lhasa Apsos are cute and cuddly. However, they are also prone to certain health concerns. Promote a healthier lifestyle by feeding your mini dog a quality diet developed to meet their specific needs, visiting your veterinarian regularly and watching out for the following health issues.
