Draft horse adoption?

Well, gesh, nobody seems to want to reply to my topics. lol.

Maybe someone can help me w/ this question, does anyone know of any draft type horse rescue/adoption places/sites? I've browsed the internet and haven't come up w/ anything really specific yet. I'd love to adopt one of those 'gentle-giants', any feedback would be great!

I'm in Stephenville, TX. (Its about an hour or 2 West of Ft. Worth) but I am willing to travel ANYWHERE in Texas, or within 400 miles of Stephenville to other states.

I would absolutely LOVE a PMU mare (I've been reading up on it a lot lately!)

I'd love to chat with you more about this, maybe you can help me find another precious baby! (And a pasture companion for my older gentlemen).

Well...prepare to be disgusted b/c that's what it is.

 

I have three Draft Horses two of which are retired rescues who are not up for Adoption Treat a Noriker was for the longest time but no one is interested in an untrained "Pet" draft horse so we took him off our adoption list and he's just ours.

 

Yes, Premirine is the hormone the "harvest" from PMU mares.
PMU= Pregnant Mares Urine

This is basically the proceedure.

They take a mare, breed her. and for the next 11 months she is tied (standing might I add) in a 4X6 stall with a catheter to collect the urine.
Once she's foaled, she has one month until the foal heat comes around. The foal is then taken away from her and she is re bred, stuck back in teh stall to continue another 11 months.

They are beautiful for sure... Any ideas why they seem to use the draft horses rather than other breeds? Bigger so more urine perhaps?

 

They can withstand the cold weather better in Canada. And produce higher levels of hormone.

The auction is going to be this November 6th. I'll be there.
Problem is its a high Slaughter auction. I'm going to try my hardest to get foal # 78 and tow of the bay/belgian/perch. I also like Mr Sonny and Stummpy but I don't know where I would put them. Stallions (especially these) are very dangerous and need to be confined...

 

moving to the horse forum since the one in the dog forum was getting long, and non dog related..hehe.
I was just wondering if there was any collaborated effort in bidding for these horses so we know if we're bidding against other good homes for the horses or the meat buyers or not. I hate to drive up the price on a horse for someone because I thought I was saving it, but then making some rescuer pay more and be unable to rescue another or something like that.

 

The PMU's wont' be the only horses there for the auction. There will be many more.
Its hard to tell you who's slaughter and whos not. Most people that frequent these auctions know and can recognize them. What I like to do is find out which ones are going for "Processing" and try to buy them outright from the slaugher trucks. Usually giving about $50 more on the purchase price. Most will sell them that way. Others are just doomed.

Thats something that you just can't worry about. Slaughter buyers aren't going to go over $200-$300 if it gets over that. You know someone else is buying for pleasure horse.
