Is it true that stallions are calmer than mares?

Stallions are far more dangerous, their testosterone runs 24/7. Where as a mare goes through estrus at strategic times.

Stallions are far more powerfull, and have a BIG tendancy to hurt you or someone eles without trying to . They are sexually drivin and it takes alot of training to have them HORSE safe. They fight other males, gelded or not, and want to herd females, in heat or not.

 

Thanks, Samsintentions, that helps me quite a bit. I guess I'll be going for a mare if I ever actually get to the point where I'm ready to buy.

 

Truthfully, mares get moody just like women, They have the monthyly moodswings. If your looking for a horse that stays melow all the time and his attitude is not going to change, I would go for a Gelding. THey have no hormones! Its been my experiance that geldings are great. They don't go through any hormonal changes (ie, their tesitcals are removed therefor no testosterone.) you don't have to worry aobut breeding, and they are generally safe around any mares.

One thing though. Proud cut geldings still have stallion tendancies around mares. So beware of those!

 

Thats not all the way true, i have seen stallions like a puppy, even around a mare and i have seen some CRAZY mares. and the other way around it just depends. but to buy a horse it would be better to get a mare unless you get a young stallion/ colt and geld him.

 

First time horse owners should go with geldings IMO... DEFINATELY!

If you can drum up a mare with enough patience to deal with first time owner woes then more power to you and a stallion...while there are exceptions...I wouldn't even LOOK at a stallion for ANYTHING but breeding purposes... Most stallions are VERY tough to handle for even experienced horse people.

alot of ranch wont have stallions. makes things very stressful. plus they can knock down fences, get destructive if they want to get to the mares. i am in phoenix. horses everywhere. on some of the arabian ranches they will have a stud runnin around, but the majority of privately owned ranches that i know wont have them. just too much of a risk

this is "in general" from my experience. now...there are exceptions. i have met some really wonderful stallions that are pretty easy going. but not alot.

i have a tennesse walker...lots of color. red/white. stockings and a blaze, and two spots on his tummy. ive had him eleven years. i had a pony horse growing up...chica...she was mostly arabian. very spirited. i prefer geldings though.
