cleaning my labs ears??

Hi, i was wondering if anyone new something for at home that i can use to clean my dogs ears...like in home things instead of bringing her to the vet...she keeps scratching at the left ear...it smells pretty bad and she keeps her head tilted to that side....if anyone can help...i would greatly appreciate it...thanks in advance....

I bought some pre-moistened ear wipes from the feed store to clean Natalies ears. She gave me a really hard time though so I only used them a few times. Maybe another poster will know of an ear cleaning solution you can prepare at home.

Some of the animal catalog's have thiungs in them to clean ears . If the dog has mites in his or her ears you will want to get something to kill them. 4 Pawsear mite rememdy, Bio- Groom ear mite treatment. on my Pugs i use Earocide to clean the dirt and wax out of their ears you don't have to dry it out and it does a good job.

If I were you I would not clean her ears. Because it sounds as if she may have an ear infection and trying to clean it out could worsen the problem.
It is also a possibility she may have ear mites. But really IM thinking ear infection. You probably should call your vet and discuss the problem with him/her.

Yeah it sounds like it may be an infection. Especially if it smells. Maybe she has something stuck in there? Whatever the case I'd be taking her to the vet. My cousin once had a gumnut stuck in his ear for ages- the doctors couldn't pick it up. He was constantly irritated by something, and my Aunt eventually got ear candling done for him and hey pronto! A gumnut! He must've shoved it in there himself! (He was quite young) A human story, but this topic reminded me.

 

My male Pyr has this problem and we have been to the vet over and over Paying $40.00 each time only to have it return. No mites just dirt and wet they say each time. We are trying to get it under control and then keep it dry. I have heard this is a problem more with dogs that have large ears hanging. Some years back I heard of and operation that they do or did. They would sew a botton on one ear and make a slit on the other so you could lift the ears up and button them to let air in and treat the ears/ears helping them dry out.We tried the vinegar and oil, peroxide,and ear rinse from the vet.
I have heard of a couple products on the market that work rather well. One was a powder that help dry up the ear cannel and the other was a foam and rinse you use. I think I well do a search and see if I can find more info on them. Try to keep the hair trimed around the ear and I have found baby wipes work well at cleaning up the dirt around and on the ears (not in the ear). Never in the ear....

Also I might add, if you take your Lab for walks and he runs through any brush or weeds, dogs will get a thing caught in their ear called a fox tail weed. It's a wee with little barbs on it and it will work its way down the ear canal and cause infection. Dogs with long ears are more prone to it because their ears hang down and you can't see the fox tail. Vets sometimes have to go into the ear to remove the fox tail and then treat the infection.

After I take my dogs for walks I look in their ears to see if there's any stuff in there.

Like Jules said, it sounds like an infection. Those smell really bad.

 

labs are known for ear infections, its smelly its most likey an infection that needs antibiotics. my lab gets them all of the time. make sure you get a wash from the vet you can use on a regular basis to help them from re-occuring. Also as luvdapits said, could be somethin in her er

Last year when we adopted Harley she had really bad mites in her ears. The vet gave us this bottle of cleaning solution with a long spout to get all the way to the canal. It was only like $15 and it worked wonders! Then we just took a q-tip to wipe away the gunk the the solution had loosened.

I would get it checked first though by the vet. If its an ear infection I think it could worsen it by trying to clean it. Not too sure though.

 

Just placed and order for this so I well let everyone know how it works in a week or so. ( Zymox Otic with hydrocortisone.)

well, have to say I wasnt impressed. I dont know if it was because Jakes infection was so bad, it had trouble clearing up. I used I am thinking for 5 days and his ears still didnt look good, maybe I didint wait long enough,so I used my left over antibiotic ointment for his ears that I got from his previous vet and that cleared it up. I think with mild infections it would work, I will try it again if he has a minor flare up.flare up. The vet used this because of Jake being on too many antibioics. It could be I just didnt give it long enough.

I think cortisone is just as harmful to use long term as antibiotics are, but that's just my opinion.

I use some natural ear cleaner and I have heard that mineral oil works fine. If the ear is stinky, it's most likely an infection so should be checked out.

My lab HATES having her ears cleaned. Any suggestions on technique?

I am clueless on this because Jakes loves his ears to prodded, he loves when you stick you fingers or things in his ears, he is sick!
