Rasing Piranah's

    Hi,

I was looking for some information on rasing piranah's. I'm a college student living with 1 roommate in an apartment. We have a relatively quiet apartment. The reason I'm posting is because I can't really find any information on actually rasing the piranah's. I want to get a killer fish (aka one that eats other animals), but it needs to be relatively cheap to setup (under 100$). I already have the tank, but thats about it.

I haven't been able to find anything on setting up the tank, how to raise them, their diets, how many fish per size of tank, etc. If anyone has any tips, please help me out. Thanks!

We need a bit more information in order to help you out.

What size tank do you have?
What kind of piranha are you looking to get?

I've owned and raised piranhas myself so here's my email (msn) if you need it

If that's the main reason you want piranhas, you're getting into it for the wrong reasons. Not only is that a pretty sadistic attitude, unless they're in fairly large groups (which would require a pretty big tank), piranhas are really shy and somewhat boring because they spend most of their time hiding.

    Hey,

lol, thats not the only reason I would like a piranah. At home, I raised and maintained a 120 gallon saltwater tank that had exotic fish such as a lion fish, various puffer fish, a snowflake eel, and many other things. The reason I describe piranah's as a killer fish, is because thats what they are known for. I came to look for some information on piranah's and see if it would be worth my time to raise a couple (or just one) while I was in college.

I have a 20 gallon tank. I was specfically looking at the red belly piranah because that is what some of my friends have had in the past, but I am open to really any species.

But back on the killing of other fish. Isn't that one of the thrills of getting more exotic and elaborate fish? I know when I had my lion fish, that was one of the highlights of having him. I'm not saying that I get off on seeing another animal die, but it is part of life. You guys aren't backed by PETA or anything are you?

To start with Red bellies need 20 gallon per full size fish, blacks u just need a crap load of room 200 gallons maybe.. "elongatus anywhere from 35 + they do not grow real big but need lots of room to swim, so maybe a 35+ gallon long tank would do u good only for elongatus.

As far as setup goes sand or gravel watever u prefer. maybe driftwood if u like. and a few plants for them to hid.

lighting should be very dim they do not like bright light.

good filteration, as u know piranhas are very messy

Hey, I'm not as strongly agenst feeder fish as others are but some of the down-sides of feeder fish are that they dont tend to provide enough nutrition as pellets and flakes do, also its a good diea to breed your own feeder fish that way you dont risk introducing disease into your tank with the feeders you buy from a lfs. I've heard that alot of pirniahs require 30-40 gallons for 1 and 20 gallons for each additional one. Good Luck.

as for red bellies u should get atleast 5 they do not do good alone... if u want just u should get a elongatus or rhom... they can not live with any other fish and will pretty much kill anything thats live or moves..

Sorry for being so harsh. I'm not entirely against feeder fish given the right circumstances. But I am against getting a fish just because of it's reputation (sort of like getting a pit bull just becauce it has the reputation for being viscious).

Like 2nafish said, with a 20 gallon tank, at the most, you'll only be able to get 1 piranha. I've never personally kept piranhas, but everyone I know of that has and has only kept 1 was highly disappointed because the fish was very shy/skittish and the owner got bored with it. Piranhas are social fish and really don't do well by themselves. So unless you're willing to get a 100+ gallon tank so you can house at least 4 of them, I suggest forgetting about piranhas.

But if you still want a piranha, the very first thing you need to do is find out if they're legal where you live.

What if they are not legal in ur state chelle? what are the fines for keeping them.. or can u just say those are really agressive pacus plz dont touch.........

I don't know what the fines are, but you won't be able to find them locally and most places won't ship them to you.

EDIT: Here's an interesting site (although it appears to be somewhat dated) about piranha laws.

I'm not hellbent on Piranah's, I'm just looking for something with an attitude. grnlemonade reccommeneded looking into some red-devil's. I live in Florida, so I'm not sure on the legality of RBP, but thats what I was looking at.

The main thing I'm looking for is attitude/presence, price (or lack of price), and I want to get as many as I can in a 20 gal without putting too much stress on them. I do want to get a carnivore type fish, or atleast the fish that has the eating habbits of a piranah.
