On tuesday my dad and I adopted a kitten from a group that comes around to petsmart every now and then. He was fine when I was handling it around the petstore but as soon as I took him home it started to sneeze and sniffle. He's been like that ever sense, and just recently I noticed that when he purrs there's a rasping noise. Is it just a cold?

probably an upper respiratory problem...very common in cats or kittens that are in overcrowded shelter conditions - and then the stress of being in a shelter, on display in a store and brought into a new enviroment can make it worse for a bit.

Since this is a kitten you should take him/her to the vet as soon as possible - not only for a checkup (good thing) but they'll probably also prescribe antibiotics if they feel the URI is bad enough...some are able to get over it on their own but being a kitten its immune system might not be strong enough yet.

Every cat I have gotten from a shelter ended up with an upper respiratory infection after I brought them home. I would go to the vet (and as already mentioned, it's a good idea for a checkup, anyway).

The sooner you can treat it, the better. My one cat had a URI and before we got to the vet it developed into full-blown pnenomnia. That was way more difficult to cure and way more dangerous to our cat (she got like that overnight - very scary).

But, anyway, if you get the kitten to the vet quick enough, you can get the little one on treatment (which isn't too expensive) and get them better.

    Good luck!

I agree. Take the kitty to the vet asap. Besides URI's, the vet can check for other problems or give you a peace of mind.

Alright, thank you all for your help and advice. I'll see if we can take him into the vet today. :) thanks again.

Its always really stressful when you get a new baby.

When I first got Stewart he was so tired all the time and slept constantly. You could litterally be scratching his head near his eyes and he would fall over snoozing. His first 2 days with us he wouldnt go potty so we took him to the vet. There was nothing wrong, the only thing was that because he came from a family that had 4 huge dogs and a stry Momma cat he had big blood sucking fleas so we had to get him the Advantage flea stuff to rid him of the fleas which was why he was so exhausted.

    Now he's purrrfect!

    Good luck :m9:
