For my 55 gallon we decided on these fish

    1 Knifefish
    1 Columbian Shark
    2 cory albino catfish
    2 upsidedown catfish
    2 kissing gourami
    1 khuli loach
    2 clown loaches
    2 tiger barbs
    1 leopard pleco

What type of knife fish? Most if not all get at least a foot or more in length. Some even get up to 36-40in in length (i.e. clown knife, african knife, royal knife). They might eat those smaller fish like the barbs and cories. They also grow extremely fast... up to 8-10in in a year.

The columbian shark only gets up to 1 foot..and the BGK gets up to 1 ft 6 inches..by the time they are that big i will have a 80 gallon setup

i would but this is just me try and find replacement for the
1 Knifefish 1 Columbian Shark but thats just me cause they get really big like i don't think they would be able to turn around in your tank i would pick some different one for those ones aslo your kissing gourami get quiet big to 8 inches each so to go with those mabye put some pearl gourmai or some rainbowfish i have allway wanted these ones

Forget about the knife (way too big), columbian shark (brackish & too big), and kissing gouramis (too big).

Also keep in mind that your clown loaches will eventualy get around 8" - 10", but it will take them quite a while to get there. And your leopard/sailfin pleco will eventually get 18" which isn't too great for a 12" wide tank. Maybe look at a bristle nose pleco; they only get around 6".

I'd add another albino cory or 2 and a few more tiger barbs (they both like groups).

And maybe add maybe a smaller species of gourami (just watch for fin nipping from the tiger barbs).

The columbian Shark is freshwater, thats what it says on liveaquaria.. in the LFS stores we saw the same exact looking fish they called them silver sharks though.. We are gonna get Cherry barbs, not tiger barbs now we've decided. And the pleco we're going to find a smaller one that only gets to like 4 inches. The clown loaches come in different sizes it depends on what size you get. The size we are getting only gets to 4 inches in length. We've decided on dwarf gouramis instead of the kissing ones because they only get to 3" max.

Some good choices here  Maybe try pearl gouramis instead of dwarfs, I just picture dwarfs looking kind of lost in a 55. I don't know of any actual clown loach that only gets to 4" long. All clowns get to about 12" as far as I know. Maybe it's a different kind of loach like a skunk or a yoyo?

And about the shark. It is freshwater as a baby but as it grows it requires more and more salt in the water until it finally needs full on marine conditions as an adult. Quite a challenging fish to keep IMO.

When columbian sharks are young, they can tolerate freshwater, but as they get older, they need more & more salt to the point that they need a very brackish/full saltwater environment.

And while there are many diferent species of loaches, there is only one called the clown loach (orange & black stripes) and it does get 12", but it will take several years to get there.

EDIT: yeah, basically what Tina already said.

Yeah we decided against the columbian shark and the loaches..we are getting a silver shark, they dont get too big and they are definatly freshwater.

Thanks for the help guys :)

Has anyone ever owned a Black Ghost knifefish? I heard they are Electric.

Do you man Corydoras agassizii (spotted cory)? Cories do best in groups and I've heard some people say that you can group them with other species, but others say they need to be in groups of their own species. So to be on the safe side, I'd add one more albino cory and 2 more agassizii.

For the dwarf gouramis you could easily get 6. I suggest trying to get females to help avoid aggression problems. Females will have a rounded dorsal fin and males have a pointed one.

You could also maybe add a nice school of neon tetras. They're not as bad as other tetras when it comes to fin nipping.
