If i put a cube of dry ice in my tank (pure C02) would it hurt my small cichlids it would be only small. Or i could put it in the sump but would the good stuff get to the tank to help the plants. Im mainly conserned for the fish as i dont want anything to happen to them, i have all ready lost one of my electric yellows when i first brought the pair it just diissapeard haven't seen it for 5 days, it is only about 2 cm long but its mate is still about. Dry ice is really good for plants it makes them go mad in the growing department.

it would create problems with your fish. fish need the oxygen in the water o "breathe" and all the co2 would do it replace that with carbon dioxide and quyite possibly kill the fish.

I've hear of someone using dry ice in a plant only tank (no fish) and it did work wonders for the plants. HOWEVER, I think it would be really easy to overdose the CO2 and kill all your fish. I wouldn't try it.

BTW, most african cichlids are herbivores so I wouldn't be surprised if the plants aren't doing too good because the fish are eating them. I had a beautiful dwarf lilly that went all the way to the top of my 55 gallon tank until the africans discovered it was tasty and turned it into a salad bar. It was gone in less than 2 days.

Also, if you haven't seen your fish in 5 days, it would be a good idea to remove the decorations and look for it. If it's dead, you don't want the body rotting away in the tank and fouling the water.

Now this morning there was one electric yellow when i turn the lights on i go to work and get home no yellow, this annoys me so i pulled every damb rock out of there not one sign not even a dot of any dead, half dead, or alive yellow fish. Now i have lids they cant get out of the tank they are small fish and their tank mates are slightly bigger but the bigger ones can't even eat full cichlids pellets i have to crush them up so im stumped ?!#*@%&)#@%^?

I know you said you have a lid, but check on the floor around the tank anyway.

Check in the filter. When I had some africans they were always jumping into the filter.

That was actually me who did the dry ice thing. Speaking chemistry, if you have a filter going which is creating constant turbulence, your fish SHOULDN'T have oxygen problems even with a larger sized piece of dry ice.

butttttttttttt don't do it yet, I'm about to test my theories myself. Sure helps the plants.

I actually just had to relocate almost all my plants into a different aquarium from my 10 gallon. I added a blue crayfish who uprooted EVERY SINGLE PLANT- purple kulumbah, razor grass, anubias, everything- and now he's moved almost ALL the gravel tto the center of the aquarium.

The only reason I'm not removing him is because he seems to have some sort of asthetic taste regarding where the plants and gravel are..... which is pretty funny!

Yeah it will be good if you could let me know how your experiment goes, i have a filter that has a air tube on it and air rates the water wihle running, plus a air curtin. As for looking for the fish none on the ground none in the filter (the can't get in it its impossible).

    Thanks for all the replys
