Hey guys!! I'm right in the path of "Charlie". I'm not in a evacuation (sp) area but I still will get hit pretty bad. I'm staying home cause there is not many places to go with 5 dogs and a cat. Any one have any ideas on what to do with my babies? I have the creats but i'm scared that if something does happen they will be trapped and I don't want them loose incase they get loose if something happnes. I thought about keeping them all on leashes but that will be hard seems I can't have them all together at once. Any ideas??

Also for those of you that may have fish I know I won't have power for at least a few days. Any ideas on how to keep air in the tank?? I looked for the pumps that run on batteries but I think everyone else beat me to it.

Thanks for any and all advise. Wish me luck!! It's going to be a fun ride!

Also I won't be around for awhile since we won't have power. Hopefully my comp makes it threw if not I will still have my lap top hopefully!

I responded to your questions on aother site, but thought I would add here too, just in case.

I don't know how the handle the situation with the dogs, but as for the pump for the fish....... I don't know if you checked the fish stores only, ,but most tackle shops in Florida have battery operated airators (sp?) for bait. If you can't find a bait shop that has one - check with anyone you know that does salt water fishing... most of them should have one in their tackle supplies.

Thanks rudysjoy for both your replys. I don't know anyone who salt water fishs. I do but I don't have one. I checked al the tackle shops close by that I can get to without a hassle. I'm going to try and get off work early tomorrow since I have to work and look some more. Thanks again.

I'll be thinking of you for the next few days. Hopefully, you're far enough inland that you won't get the big storm surge, and protected enough to avoid some of the wind damage. I thought about it after I went to bed last night. They also have air tablets. I don't know how well they work for aquariam fish, but we have use them for bait. They do keep the bait alive. Hopefully, if you can't find the airator (sp?), you can find some of them.

2 weeks ago, I moved my Mother back to Michigan from Naples, Florida. She misses her home down there, but is so relieved that she is in Michigan right now.

Good luck on keeping your pets safe (and yourself). Let us know how you do when it's over.

Jeepers, and we think we have it bad when we have a 30 minute storm where the tv goes a bit funny.

Sorry I have no clue on where to start to protect everything, but I'm sure you'll have sussed it with this bit of prep time.

I wish you all the luck over the next few days, and hope your "fun ride" is plain sailing!

Yesterday we had a really bad strom ,blowing everything everywhere the clouds racing by. It reminded of when I was a kid and a hurricane would hit the coast, but we would also have side effects, But my fi said it was the worst storm he has every seen, the power didn't even go out! He said they have only had one hurricane ever here, and no one knew what to do! You have a salt water tank Stormy? I don'T know what to tell ya, I only ever had fresh, but sometimes we would just blow the tube ourselves or recycle the water? take someout and shake it up then pour it back in? Don't know how good that would be but I think it could put somemore air back in the tank? or maybe if you have a special sponge and squeeze it in there, that would make bubbles, but I don't know how sensitive your salt tank is! I know they can be super sensitive. I would just let your dogs run loose, don'T put them in their crates or leash them.

What a difficult position to be in! I don't know what to do about the dogs. You'd think they'd be safer in their crates, but I would worry they would be trapped if something did happen, like you said. I do know I have seen too many dogs hungs by their leashes when tornados go through, so I would say NOT to put a leash on them. It may even be safer in that regard to not have a collar on, but I would think the possibility of getting lost is greater than being strangled by a collar - so keep the collars on with ID tags so if they do get lost they can be returned to you.

I hope it doesn't get bad where you are!

Stormy: I was just hearing that Charlie is going to be pretty bad. They want 1.3 million people to evacuate.

Jamiya gave you good info for what to do with your pets. Do you have a gas generator? That way you can have lights and your fish tank plugged in.

Whatever you decide to do, take care!!! They are expecting 120 mph winds and surges up to 16 ft. possibly. If the storm is a catagory 3, parts of downtown Tampa could be under water. Wish you could have found a way to evacuate.

I'll be watching the news and keeping you and your family in my thoughts. Good Luck, stay safe.

I know what you are going through stormy. I used to live on the coast of SC and we had to evacuate a few times. What a nightmare!!! Took about 9 hrs to get somewhere that should have taken 2. Then when we got to a safe place, there was not a single hotel that had vacancy. With us we had 5 cats, 2 dogs, 2 horses, my 100 yr old great grandmother, my grandmother and my mom and my brother. Nightmare. THEN THE THING DIDN'T EVEN HIT WHERE WE LIVED!!!!!!!

Anyways, the best thing to do is just wait. It won't hit suddenly. You can board your windows up or at least put tape on them. If you live in a house (Not mobile home) you should have no problems. Since they have crates they would most likely be most comfortable in them. But I would put the crates in a house with no windows or try to put them in the center of the house. If you are in a flood zone or in a mobile home, I would evacuate (or at least get somewhere safer). The most important thing is to make sure you have supplies - water, food (you and dogs), whatever other stuff you may need. Make sure you have all your dogs records together in case you do have to leave.

Stormy, I just checked the Doplar Radar. Seems its gonna hit by 1 pm. If it already hasn't. Good luck and god bless. They said the winds are at 110 mph with 15 ft swells...

The best advice I can give you. Let your dogs loose in the house. Leave their collars with ID tags on. Also put their food in one area of the house with a bottle of water, all vet records and info in a plastic bag.
If you have horses or cattle. Do not put them in a barn or small pen!!! Let them have the pasture. They are safer free than contained. They can get away and less likely to be hit by debres.

I know its going to be scary. I went through Alison, and my step dad and grand parnet went through Carla....

You need to stay in a center room like a closet or bathroom that has good supports. I'm the Buisness Manager of Nationwide Manufactured HOmes. I can tell you this. If you are in a manufactured or Modular home. GET THE HELL OUT NOW!
They can not withstand the winds. We have a policy that anything ina Teir One county has to be wind zone II. They can withstand winds up to 65mph. Thats it.

Good luck again. and your in my prayrs.

I just heard they're planning on cutting all electrical in that area. OMG, I hope they're all safe. They also said the storm is intensifying. This could be really bad! :(

stormy, can you put them in their crates and transport them out? there has to be shelter that will house them. but then again when you have a million people being evacuated that is hard. I am paraying for both your and your pups safety and good luck.

we are dealing a a huge fire right now and local shelters and vets are giving free boarding to all kinds of animals to people who have lost their homes. I am going down at lunch to one of the places to see if they need temp foster homes.

I'm really worried for all the animals getting caught up in this :(
I know there are millions of people too, but they can look out for themselves, or at least understand what's going on.

I just never knew how serious it was, we get a snippet on the news but that's it. The size of it is unimaginable.

I hope you're all ok Stormy.

The last hurricane we evacuated for was HUGE. I don't remember the name...think it was Bertha but not sure. I remember looking at it on the TV. THe thing was bigger than the entire state of SC. THat wasn't including the outlying wind swirl things (you know what I mean) - the main part of it was bigger than SC. Since where I lived is basically an island, we decided we had to leave.

Charley looks big too but it is going alot over land. It always loses alot of its strength over land. It is worst when it comes in and hits the coast. It looks like it will be hitting sc from behind so we aren't leaving.

Stomy, are you ok? Charley came across north of us after making a "jog" at the right moment. We ended up with rain and wind, but nothing worse than our usual thunderstorms.

Let us know how you fared!
