My normally sweet Maine Coon turns in to a "Tiger" if I try to clip her nails. I took her to the vet a month ago and he tought us how to do it. But Kaylee will have no part of it. Does anyone have any special tips or tricks? I have tried treats, distractions, toys, etc, to no avail.

I had to clip Olive's nails while she was asleep. I could usually get 3 nails done by the time she woke up and took off. So it would take about 3 tries to finish them off. I would always keep the clippers next to me on the couch so when she fell asleep they would be on hand.

Moe, on the other hand, is a :m30: when it comes to nail clipping. She doesn't like it, but she sits very still and glares at me until it's done.

I've officially given up with nail trimming. I used to wait until Footsie was asleep, even that doesn't work anymore. After man hours and many deep scratches I decided it wasn't worth the time and effort I was putting in.

Now, once a month I take Footsie to PetSmart and have them to it for $12. He hates (attacks) a couple strangers instead of me. They have a harness setup so he can't run and hide so it takes them less then 10 minutes.

It's too tortuos to attempt nail cutting my 4 kitties. So I don't even bother.

I don't nail clip our cats. They are always outside and climbing trees and stuff, so it isn'y necessary.

I have my three sphynx kitties, I have to cut their nails weekly, and I bundle them up like babies in blankets, and take one foot out at a time. Alot of the time Sassy and Penny will fall asleep while I do it. Jazzy squirms the whole time I do it, but we make it through it.

As for depot (Domestic Short Hair) FORGET IT!! I value the skin on my arms far too much to mess with Miss Priss' nails!!! LOL

Best idea i seen/know of is to wrap the little arlings up in a swaddling blanket.

At the vet hospital we had a 'cat bag' . it had a zipper on the top and at one end a circle where their head poked out, and optional zipper openings at each end near the legs.

course having extra special treats cant hurt. might turn into a 2 person job.

Lex holds realitively still and allows it... Razberry i dont do his coz he needs them right now to get up on things :)

I don't have any problems doing Hunter's nails....
Since he was a kitten, I have always played with his paws a lot, making them retract and such.
When we are all sitting on the couch watching TV and he has calmed down, I get the clippers (they are in a basket by the sofa)....he sniffs them and then I start playing with his nails (aka, clipping them).
I don't think he notices, but I think the key is doing it on their time and not on our time!

(another thing to note is that I am really good at cutting animals' nails, I've always done our animals and my ex-boyfriend's mom had me cut their 4 German Shepards' nails many moons ago...hehe...this is me tooting my own horn LOL)

try clipping a polydactyl that weighs 11 lbs. and growls when he sees the clippers coming

I too prefer paying the vet to handle such dangerous work...now and then I'll clip Zeus' claws but I can only get about 3 done (he has 28 claws). Missy nope....she turns into a demon

Most of mine are really good about getting their nails clipped but it takes 2 people to cut Tiddy's nails and I have to wrap Chieve in a towel to cute his. Maybe you can try wrapping the cat in towel or something...if thats too difficult maybe you could get someone to help you. Have the person hold the cat in the wrapped towel while you trim the nails.

Fudgie will sit on my lap calm as you like while I trim his nails. With Pudcat for the first few months I had to wrap him in a towel, but now he let's me trim them whenever I want to. I guess he didn't like the towel much!! A towel, or blanket does seem like your best bet. :D
