DIY Driftwood

I was going out today and find some big natural driftwood for my 120 gallon and I know to stay away from green spotted wood (copper) and the obvious molds and fungus etc... Should I clean it somehow besides water and cloth?? Also how would I get the wood to sink?

 

The best way to clean it with only using water is to use a pressuer washer. I did that to mine and it got it super clean. The way I got it to sink was by drilling holes on the bottom and stuffing it with some rocks I found in my yard.

Boiling it is definitely necessary IMO for collected wood. My medium sized piece took about 3 days worth of constant boiling before I found it suitable to put in the tank. I also took a new toothbrush and ran it under very hot water while using the toothbrush to scrub it really good. The boiling will also help it sink.

 

Boiling will kill anything that might be living in/on it. It will also get rid of some of the tannins so your water won't turn yellow, and I believe it will make it sink a little more quickly.

Alright, but I dont know hot in the heck I will boil a piece of wood about 4 feet long.... Any other ideas on how to get it to sink? I am probably gonna tied big rocks to them.

 

Wow! you must have a pretty large tank...

btw, the drift wood from petshop sinks easily without any weights attached in it. Im wondering how these woods are being treated...

 

My tank is a 120 gallon (actually not that big compared to some peoples on here, lol). The driftwood at Petsmart and whatnot is fake I am pretty sure it is like hard plastic or whatever you call that stuff.

 

not to metion it is like 50$ :lol:
