Bugs in my tank

:shock: Lately I've been noticing some strange little bugs in my house. Their not flies or mosquitos but they are flying insects. I couldn't imagine where they would be coming from but then I decided to look in my fish tank (it is a 20 gallon tank that is the home of my two cichlids) and I saw two black worm-like things. There's a lot of algae in my tank and at first I thought it was part of the algae but then it started moving. Does anybody know what these things are and if you think they might be related to the little flying insects? How can I get rid of them? Thanks!

 

First of all clean your tank, then just pick the larva up and flush them down the drain! Clean your tank man it sounds unhealthy!

 

I cleaned my tank not to long ago. The algae builds up fast! I got a pleco once but my cichlid killed it! Is there anything else I can do?! :?

 

I would just net them out and then skim the top of the water with the net incase there is any larvae or anything up there. Make sure you keep the lid closed tightly on the tank to avoid more things from getting in there and keep up with your water changes, at least once per week

It's ok to have some algae in a tank too. I have lots so don't worry about it. A pleco would out grow your tank anyway

 

what kind of cichlid?

 

Well, u better clean your tank first.. and theres a fish that loves insect which is the archer fish.. perhaps you may need it.. Best of luck!

 

My cichlids are Malawi Mbuna cichlids. One is a Melanochromis auratus (which I think is also called a Golden Mbuna, I just call it "yellow fish") and the other is a Labidochromis freibergi (I call this one "blue fish"). I just thought the bugs were coming from the algae. Do you think that a bug just got in my tank and that's where they came from? I've had these two fish for over a year without this problem. I've just been having problems with the algae a lot! Also the bugs weren't floating in the tank. they were just crawling on the side. I only saw two of them. I just thought that that might be where those flying insects were coming from.
