After Surgery - keeping the bandage dry

My cat just had surgery to repair a broken leg - broken in 12 pieces - has pins and plates inside - one unhappy kitty. He is on the mend though and is home. However, his bandage needs to stay dry. The outer wrapping got wet from his pee today, and i don't know if the bandage itself got wet. We can't tell - it doesnt feel wet. But if it did get wet, we would need to go to the vet - which is over an hour away. Do i have to go to the vet every single day to change the bandage? how can it be waterproofed?

the vet didn't offer any suggestions? Luckily (knocking on wood) I've never had to deal with a broken limb on a pet so I have no suggestions other than polyuerethane (kidding just kidding). Poor kitty....

:m23: and welcome! I'm sorry about your kitty! :( What's his name and how did it happen? Love to see his pics if you have any. Sorry I don't have any advice. Call your vet.

Do you think this would work on your cat? It's expensive! :0011:

His name is Bagoda, he is almost two and was run over by a car. We looked all over for him with no luck. Luckly he dragged himself home and we took him in right away. No, the surgery specialist didn't give us any instrustions, but our local vet did. We have a grocery bag taped around his bandage that needs to be changed every day. His bandage needs to be changed once a week. His pins should be out in 3 months. He has a long road to recovery.

Bagoda, the one with the hurt leg, is the one on the right. Otto his brother is on the left.

I had a kitty with the same problem. He was hit by a car and had a broken femur and a shattered pelvis. He had all the pins and stuff too. My suggestion would be a ziploc baggie or something but him getting a little pee on it doesn't sound all that bad. If he accidentally gets in some water and the thing gets soaked I would take him back to the vet but otherwise it should be okay. Have fun with your kitty...when he gets out of those bandages he'll be as playeful as ever!

Bogie is doing pretty good I think. He actually started walking just a little bit today, even putting a little weight on his injured leg. It of course seems to hurt him still, its been only a week since the accident. He is going to get his bandage changed on Wednesday. I suppose he is going to need it changed every week? This is turning into one expensive kitty!

Thanks for the info everyone, and is there a link to the contest? I couldn't seem to find it.

Wow, those are great pics! Your kitties are so athletic. Pumpkin and Monty Boy should get a few pointers from your kitties. A lot of us usually skip over the stickies too. LOL's.
