Buying a betta

Hi, everyone. I am going to buy a betta this saturday. I am going to buy a 3 - 5 gallon bowl/jar some gravel, a snail and a plant or two. Any advice.

 

Well.... maybe an air stone or something for air or filtration.. sounds like your actually very well set.

 

If you're going to be doing 100% water changes every 1 - 2 weeks, you're pretty well set.

If you have a snail in there, keep in mind you'll have to suppliment his diet with pieces of algae waffer because the betta won't leave any food for him and he likely won't get enough algae from the glass & decorations. I recently put 3/8" baby apple/mystery snails in each of my betta jars. Every week I throw in about 1/8 of an algae waffer. Don't put in too much or it will foul the water.

EDIT: if you have live plants in there, then the snail can munch on those instead of algae waffers.

Can I keep one male betta in my tank of clow loaches, and gouramis?

 

Gouramis and male bettas tend to not get along very well because they're so closely related.

what happened to them?

 

im guessing nitrate/nitrite levles were to high, but they have bin way down for about 3 days, they finaly died today, so I have lost a total of 3 of 4.

 

So if I want to do less frequency water changes then is it best to take out the snail? I thought that the snail would help.
