I have decided to get an Oscar (although I dont know which kind yet) but I need to know a few things before i buy.

1: A friend of mine has a tank that she is willing to give me but she only knows the measurements in inches. they are 36,12,20. Anybody know how to calculate the gallons??..if this isnt big enough i will go with the LFS tank.

2: I was looking at baby Oscars in Walmart and they had a black and white mixed colouration...will they have this when they get to be full size, or will they grow out of it? I havent seen any pics of adult Oscars with this colouring so far...

3: Which would be better in an Oscar tank..sand or graval? I really like the look of sand but do oscars?

Thanks for any help you can give. :)

Sorry, I cannot help with many of your questions. But I do know that a tank of those dimensions is not big enough for one oscar. I estimate it to be about 30 gallons.

    1. The tank is 37.5 gallons which isn't large enough for an oscar. To figure volume: (length x width x height)/231 = gallons.

    2. Coloration tends to change a lot as the fish grows. I believe juveniles that are black with silver looking stripes will end up being tigers (the silver stripes will turn orange).

    3. Sand is perfectly find with oscars.

baby oscars are great. they get dull colors when they get older. unless u get like an albino, a red and a tiger in the same tank.

I only have walmart and an individual pet and plant store near me which doesnt carry much in the way of Oscars. The closest Petsmart is 45-60 mins away. Its not okay to have a fish in a bag that long is it? last time my fish were in a bag for long, they got ich. (and i was a real newbie then, so i didnt recognise it and they died. Definitly dont want that to happen again...)

actually 45-60 minutes would be fine....and the fish u had before didnt get ich from being the bag that long...ich is a parasite and is spread by being in the infected water...they probably got it from the tank they were in before you bought them.
