Hi .... any help would be really great.
My Burmese Cat Samara has stopped eating the last couple of days. She has always been a tiny cat so now she is becoming especially thing. She drinks a little water, but when I feed her food she licks it for a bit and then goes to her basket to sleep.
I have had her since she was a kitten. Her sister died last year at the age of 19 and she suffered from that but she seemed normal until a couple of days ago. I feel this lack of energy is hampering her down .... she has trouble jumping over the barrier i keep at the door for my dogs. She can still get over it but only on a second jump or so.
I know she is getting old but she is usually very active and all of a sudden has stopped. I decided to force feed her a little which she didn't like but she kept the tuna i fed her down. I gave her tuna other than her regular food as it is her favourite I thought she might like it but not really.
Perhaps I will take her down to the vet soon. She doesn't look in pain but she is extremely thin so I am a bit worried.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry your kitty isn't feeling well. 20 years old....wow. You must be a great furmommy.

I think the answer here is to get her to the vet ASAP. Not eating for that many days isn't good.

Tuna, I have heard here at this forum, isn't good to feed her. Here is a link to a recent post with information on tuna...please note that the post is about things that are poisonous to cats...although tuna is not poisonous they state it's not good...

    Please keep us posted.

thankyou for the hastly reply. I just read that thing on tuna. It has always been her fav and I only feed her it on special occasions so I dont think it is that bad .... in that thread it also said it was ok if you are just trying to get sick cats to start eating again. so Yeh .... Ill take her to the vet this weekend when I get the time. I hope she will be ok. I will just try and continue to give her some food each day and get her to eat as muc has i can.

Your right...I'm sorry...I didn't read through the whole post. I just remembered recently reading that post about tuna not being good. Maybe try some boiled chicken too. This has always been what the vet has recommended when I've have a sick kitten....maybe your cat will like that too.

At least you say she's eating a little. Has she kept everything down or has she been vomiting?

If you can find the time please try to take her to the vet before the weekend.

She has been eating a little and no vomiting. She is drinking fine. I just cleaned up her litter box and refilled it because it was gettin a bit dirty i must admit  But yeh she is drinking, only small quantities but she is drinking her water so that is good.
I might try the boiled chicken. I don't really have any here but I will try to get some. Also I will see what happens and if it gets worse will take her to the vet before the weekend however I don't think I will be able to.

My other cat who was also a burmese died last year. She was alot larger than Samara but not fat about normal size i guess but compared to Samara alot bigger. My darling Samara has always been tiny. Mischa my other cat was blind for a year before she died and the day she died could not get out of her bed as she couldn't walk. I tried to stand her but her legs were too weak so she lay in her basket and died peacefully that night. It was heartbreaking. It has been over a year, but it mustve been hard on Samara who had lived with her sister her whole life. I hope my Samara gets better soon, I'm sure she will.

is there anyway you could get her to the vet sooner? 3 more days is a long time for a geriatric cat who isn't eating.

I hope all goes well and please let us know how she's progressing

I cannot take her tomorrow (thur here in AUS) but I will try Friday if I can. I will try calling the vet to ask for advice tomorrow.

oh and thanx for all your kind words. She doesn't seem too worried herself .... she is a quite a spoiled cat and was a show cat. I sit down and put her food in front of her and beg for her to eat it and she sniffs it and then looks at me in this "Can i just go back to my basket now" look. 8) She is adorable ... but quite stubborn

 Just an update. My darling girl just died. She stopped eating because she knew it was her time. She was even going into dark places and hiding.
I took her to my bedroom for her to sleep as she was very weak. Although still walking.
However when i returned she was lying on the floor with her eyes wide open she looked empty but she was still there. she was breathing very difficultly and heavily. I picked her up and tried to make her stand but she just collapsed.
I picked her up and took her to her basket where she lay. She started to convulse slightly so i hugged her while she was in her basket and talked to her. They were just little shakes at first but after a couple they turned a bit violent and the next one she tensed all up her claws and all. I hugged her and I said to her "just let go darling Samara, just let it go" and then after a few more which i was talking to her calming her she finally left this world.
I'm so very upset but she was so old and has had a great life. She is now with her sister and they will keep each other company till I join them whenever that happens.
Im not sure what caused her to die, is convulsing normal:?:, but I don't think anything could be done. I don't blame myself at all, it was her time.

Please say your prayers for her and also her sister Misha already in heaven.

Samara 20 yrs old 1984-2004 Died 1st October
Misha 19 yrs old 1984-2003 Died 3rd August

I know both my darlings could never be replaced, but I probably am looking to buy a new kitten and let her have the wonderful life that I gave my two darlings. They were both Burmese, Misha was a blue burmese and Samara was a Sable. I don't want to get the same but something similar. Are there any other colours for Burmese or any other similar kittens who are lovely pets?

I'm so sorry for your loss. You were obviously a wonderful caretaker for these girls. I hope I'm lucky enough to get 20 years with my girl too. You're in my thoughts today. Take care of yourself. :(

hugs to you....was probably just age and organ shut down- happens at this age and any heroic measures would have involved many blood tests and lots of medications. Letting her go in peace and at home was probably the most loving thing you could do.

Her sister is waiting at the Bridge for her and they can play together again.

I am so sorry for your loss. Reading that post just made me cry

I'm sitting with Kyrre on my lap right now, and my heart feels like it's about to burst from love to this little furball. I really hope I will be able to give him 20 years of love, like you did to your two girls.

Have you seen the story about the Rainbow Bridge? http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html

I cry everytime I watch this...

I'm sooo sorry! What a horrible thing! I never want to see my kitties die, it would be too depressing! But I'm glad you were there with her, and I'm glad you let her go in peace!

Bente! That is so sad! I'd never seen "The Rainbow Bridge" before and I just cried my eyes out watching it!

I am so sorry for your loss. I read this thread earlier today when I had a free moment at work and found myself with tears in my eyes. I lost my Milo back in June. I was with him when he was put to sleep. It was his time as it was Samara's time....as hard as it must have been for you, you helped guide her over...she is at peace now.

I'm sorry I haven't posted earlier. This just hit so close to home. My mother in law has/had 2 dog's (15+ years) and a cat (20+). Hubby and I had to take one of the dogs,Willy to be put down at the vet's (Major arthritis and a tumor the size of a melon on his leg that became gangrangis), mom just couldn't do it. We took him home afterward and buried him in the back yard. The other dog, still living is blind and deaf and can barely walk due to arthritis. She is so cute and loving but living in total paranoia. And Polly, the cat is just aged and frail. Barely eats anymore. Mom takes both Missy and Polly to the vet regularally. The Vet says just let Polly go naturally, but suggests putting Missy down. She just can't bring herself to let her go. It's so sad.

Sorry for adding a sad story to your burden but I just wanted to let you know that many of us understand what you're going through and our hearts are with you.

 I'm terribly sorry about your loss, I know the feeling... but to be able to comfort her and let her know that its okay to let go, rather than be selfish and plead for her to hang on for your sake is something that takes a huge heart and she was so lucky to have you there with her to help her leave in peace. Im sure that any future kittens will have the best life possible with an amazing fried.

As for the Rainbow bridge movie...oh my, I bawled my eyes out, and Im still crying. That was sooo well done, with the music and pictures and beatuiful words. I will be sure to bookmark that page.
