Where does your dog sleep?

Hi everyone...I am thinking ahead (waaay ahead since I don't even have a dog yet :) and trying to figure out where I am going to have her sleep. I remember how horrible it was when my parents got their shih tzu (I was living at home with them right before getting married) and the crying she did the first night in her crate! I ended up bringing her in bed with me and she quieted right down and slept the rest of the night. I know some people say you have to tough it out and let them cry, but I didn't do that with my human boys so why would I do it to my dog? We co-slept with both our boys until about the age of 1 1/2 or 2.
Anyway...I know some will say that this will teach the dog they are the boss, but I have also read that your dog will bond more with you if you sleep with them.
I'm not worried about her sleeping with me forever....I'm sure eventually she will end up sleeping with my boys. And even if she does sleep with me...a 10 lb dog is nothing when you are used to sleeping with a toddler! LOL

    Funny you should ask...

Before we got our girls I remember telling hubby that there was noooo way they were sleeping in our bed. We crated them at night, together (they are always together) and they were fine.. no crying at all (I think b/c they had each other).

Anyway, about a month ago, there was a big storm here and we let the girls sleep with us that night.. been that way ever since! I love having them with us & they absolutely love it too! I sometimes forget they are there because they are so little :D They are still too small and can't get up on the bed by themselves but it's funny to see them get all excited after they go out to potty for the last time and they run SO fast to the bed and bounce up and down as if to say "pick me up, pick me up!!!"

My only issue with sleeping with my new little guy was squishing him! And the fact not all puppies are potty trained, I wouldn't want to wake up next to any surprises! I don't have to worry about that now but he's still only 2 lbs so he sleeps inside a soft sided bed/crate type thing next to me. It's on my bed, but on the side of the bed on the other side of my pillow, like between my pillow and the night stand. So he can look out during the night and see that he's not all by himself. My siberian husky sleeps on the bed too, so I guess you could say I don't have a problem with sharing. My husky has her spot all claimed out, she doesn't care if someone else is sleeping there either, she'll climb right up and sleep on top of them

Surprisingly, neither of my pekes sleep in my bed. Once in a while, Bailey will put his front paws up on the bedside, and spend awhile at the foot of the bed. But eventually, he will jump off (via a bedside bench), and eventually find his way to his bed - always along side of me.

The little girl, Brandee, must have a special spot staked out under the bed, because I can sure hear snoring eminating from beneath my mattress, and it's often quite loud!! I really wouldn't mind it if they slept with me, though!

What kind of dog are you considering, Nicole?

My Bella sleeps with me too. The first night I had her she slept in a crate and did fine but the next night she whined and cried so I put her in the bed with me and she was asleep in seconds. I dont mind and wanted her to sleep with me. The only thing I worried about was her smothering somehow cause she is so little. She does fine in the bed and if she has to use the bathroom in the middle of the night she wakes me up by licking me or getting close up in my face and breathing hard. :m30:

About the "smothering" issue. People always said that to me about sleeping with my human babies and I can tell you (and I don't know if it is the same with a dog) that I ALWAYS knew they were there. It was like an awareness--kind of like how you never roll off the bed--you are always aware, even in your sleep, where the edge of the bed is. Since having kids, I never get into a super deep sleep--guess that just comes with the territory and is part of nature. Plus, I'm fairly sure your dog would let you know if you were laying on top of them :)

Molly sleeps in a crate on the floor right next to my side of the bed. She has a super soft crate pad in it. She also takes a nap in it, in the afternoons around 1:30.
I never had a problem with her going in the crate. The breeder we got her from had already started crating the pups when she had to leave to run errands...so that is probably why she was used to it.
From day one, she never complained or had an accident in it.
Hubby wants her to start sleeping with us....but I worry about him hurting her, as he thrashes, kicks, ect. Plus he sleeps so hard, I don't know if he'd realize if he was on top of her.
The other thing is, I have enough difficulty sleeping with the way hubby thrashes...plus with two cats on the bed....I worry that I wouldn't get much sleep.
Perhaps later, when she's bigger and older we'll give it a try.

My two shih-poos sleep in my bed...however, sometimes they'll sleep on their own beds on the floor in the bedroom, or they'll sleep elsewhere in the house. But I'd say about 95% of the time they are up on the bed with me.

My bed is one of those that are REALLY high off the ground, so I had to construct a step-stool type thing so they can get up on the bed. If it weren't for that, they wouldn't be able to jump up on the bed with me...LOL!!!

There was a thread here discussing this very issue, so if you're interested in hearing what others had to say, take a look at this link:

I ditto what everyone here has said... Bailey sleeps in the bed with us/me, also. Once he was big enough and old enough to jump that high, it was a lost cause! LOL.... He usually snuggles for a bit, then eventually heads to the foot of the bed.

Well, mine have all been crate trained at night... mainly because of the housebreaking issue.... however, Gracie is in bed with me now, while Sammy and Lyle prefer the crate. Plus, Lyle is still having issues with potty training, so......

Lately, hubby hasen't been making it past the recliner at night, so Gracie has been taking full advantage of his side of the bed. But when he does make it to bed, she lets him know that he is infringing on her side of the bed... he has to physically pick her up and move her!!!!!

Denise, Sasha does the very same thing. She won't move unless I tell her too. During the first year, she actually sat up and growled at him, like saying don't you come any closer. Then there were times. when she would be laying with me and hubby would be coming to bed and she would get and and beat him to his spot. It was really funny to watch. We did get it sorted out though. She got put on the floor when she was a naughty girl. Rufus used to sleep with us until I could not handle his shedding anymore. I told hubby at least one place has got to be fur free. He has his bed in the living room and one beside ours. Sasha cuddles up inbetween us sometimes practically stealing hubbys pillow kicking him. LOL

edited to say, Rene what a funny place for sebastian to sleep. Must be cool.
