Young Appy right for me?

Hi I'm Sara. I've popped in here from time to time and I have a question. I've had horses since I was 6 and ridden since then. Had about 4 or 5 yeas of lessons in Hunter Jumper stuff and worked cows etc... I've ridden COUNTLESS different horses etc... BUT they were all old and NONE were Appy's. I'm currently looking at a 2 1/2 year old Appy mare...Leapord that MIGHT reach 15hands when full grown (doubt she'll get that big) She's green, but been under a trainer for several months... I haven't met her YET but will do so ASAP.

According to the owner of the mare she is a NICE girl loads, unloads, ties and all that jazz. My primary experience has been with Arabs so I think I can handle an Appy... I just don't know much about the breed...

Does anyone have anything to say about my thoughts... I'll see if I can get a couple pics onto my shutterfly so I can let you guys check her out....

    Thoughts?

Some people swear appys are the best horses there are and others swear they'd never own them. I've never owned one, but i've ridden them and personally I don't see a huge personality difference then most other horses, they are all individuals. However, i have been told apps are quite stubborn and can be a little "spirited"..but if you like the horse and she seems to be pretty good, i;d go for it. I'm one of those people who could live without Arabs, so you should do fine..hehe. Not to say I haven't ridden some wonderful arabs, but in general my experiences have left me wanting to tear my hair out. ;)

    Here's "sugar"

That's her name and I've spoken to several people. I can talk to the vet about her...I can also visit with her trainer about her...and I'll get to meet her soon... I think she may be just right for me the more I learn about her. These were taken last January and I guess she's grown since then...

Boy, she's pretty! I think you'll do fine with her. If you feel confortable with her and everything. If oyu can handle an arab then you can handle an appy. Do you have any expirienced friends? Mabye they could come and ride her and see how she is? I also recommend a vet check before you buy her. Just to make sure. She sounds really wonderful though.

I have the same vet that the owner of "Sugar" has and I've already contacted him... I'm going to call him back right now to get the scoop... The trainer comes highly recommended and I'll be talking to her ALONE without the owner/seller and we'll see from there... I'll be riding her this evening!!!

Thanks for the input...I'll keep you updated...LOL

    Appy's are excellent

I've owned Appy's since I was a very little girl and have never found a better horse. I'm not saying that I haven't run across a bad one or two but for the most part they are great. You should have no problem as long as everything with the vet and trainer checks out.... Hope you two make a great fit. :y_the_best:

    Last Nights Ride on Sugar

Well I rode Sugar yesterday... Caught easily, she didn't spook except once after her ride etc... while she was standing tied to the horse trailer she backed into the wheel well on accident and it gave her a start...it was kinda cute...but she didn't even jerk her lead rope or anything.... Before I got on I lunged her in the round pen (no line and she got to tell me when she was done with a bend and slowing down...) then after that saddled her all up and lunged her again...same thing but we had her work a little more because it'd been a week since anything was done with her... She kicked a bit getting the bugs out...and then Anne put the buckets on her...one in front on the and one in back filled with rocks to make noise and Sugar just looked at them...Anne said that's about all she did when she first put the buckets on her... She did fine... Anne threw a bucked under her belly between her legs and dragged it back through...Sugar didn't even take step just wiggled her ears and looked at the bucket and Ann... Then Ann sat a bucket on her saddle and let it tip off...Sugar just looked at that too...like it was just something different... Anne got on her and she wasn't exactly ready to go run a marathon...she is a slow girl but I figure she just hasn't learned to go yet...from what I see... Here __expression is nice and soft and she isn't panicy about pleasing... I got on her and managed to get more out of her than Anne did so I think that was a good sign...LOL... Seriously Sugar is ready to get out of a round pen and see the sights...in between some work on moving etc...

I'm wanting to get her but will need time to get my mom's place ready for TWO horses...I told Heidi that I could board her but would have to make lower payments while doing so and that if not it would take me a little time to get the place ready for her...in the meantime I told her I'd be able to make payments...

She's a neat horse...a far cry from my Arab who pulls back out of fear of WHATEVER, who won't load and is still freaked of the blanket till he gets a good sniff of it... At 2 1/2 I'm throughly impressed... She'll be pretty athletic and probably get up to 15hands if you go by that elbow to fetlock rule (measure from Elbo to Fetlock and then rotate it should be an even distance between the shoulder and whithers)...she's a cutie...
