I've only posted when I needed help with our lab puppy & you all have always given me your best advice. Buster is our yellow lab that had major weight issues starting out...well he's now 10 months old & about 70 lbs. Greatest dog I've ever owned. However he has this annoying habit of rolling on his back in the backyard & I think in poop. We've had to wash him 3 x's this week with a horrible blackish stench on his neck & sides. Like what's the deal..is this a lab trait or peculiar to Buster? My daughter watched him roll in it yesterday...happy as can be. Now I don't know if it is poop or what...cause I always pick up in the yard & when he makes in the dog run he steps gingerly around it. It could be other animals poop as we our loaded with squirrels, rabbits, etc. Anyway what do you guys think, at this point I'm hesitant to let him out to run in the yard without supervision. Thanks.

Our yellow lab the same way, we have wild rabbits and turkeys and boy does he love to roll in the turkey poop, luckily we have a fenced back yard so he can only do it it when we are out front

Sorry, but I cant help but it has to be the critters poop he is attracted to.

Dogs love to roll in smelly things. That's just the way it is. I'm not sure you will be able to train him not to do it. I'd say just keep a hose handy and hose him off before he comes inside. Usually labs are pretty easy to clean up - their coats shed dirt and water very well.

I'd say Buster is rolling around in another animal's poop. For the life of me I don't understand why. I've had some dogs that do and some that don't. In my case it's been female dogs that did it.

Another weird thing I've seen dogs do is smash their faces on bugs. If there's a bug on the floor, Grace will will rub and smash both sides of her face on the bug. :?: I also had another female who did this. She would also roll in poop of cows, horses, and wild animals, not dog poop.

So I'm curious on what other people say is the reason behind this strange behavior.

Nobody really knows. Some people theorize that it has to do with covering their scent so prey does not get suspicious. Others say it's just like doggie perfume. There are as many theories as there are dogs - but they love it for whatever reason!

My dogs practically kill each other racing to the horse pasture to be the first to roll in the horse poo. Now that is some Stinky Stuff! Oh gosh and it's so hard to get the smell off their coats! I don't know why dogs love to do such gross stuff!

    thanks

Thanks guys...you always seem to have an answer. Well sounds like there is not much I can do about it. He loves rolling around in rabbit poop. He's so happy I won't even try to stop him...& just get the hose ready.

My Lab Winnie did this once too! Luckily she doesnt do it at home, but she is always rolling on other things. She loves wet towels, dryer sheets, some peoples shoes and pants at the park, and much more. My friends have this dog that LOVES ciggerette butts and will roll on those, he will even pick them up and move the butts into a better position to roll on....funny thing.
