My Chihuahua is in season....

(New to this site, so forgive me if i have posted this message in the wrong area!)

My 9 month old Chihuahua, Fifi, has just come into Season. I was told by her breeder, that i should let her have one season before i get her spayed. Is this correct? If not it is a bit late now, but dont want to go ahead and get her spayed now after she has had one season if it is the wrong thing to do. Hmmmm? Can anyone help with this...?

Also, if i did get her spayed will it change her personality? As at the moment she is very upbeat and lively!

I have always had small female dogs, and have heard every "wive's tale" there is. What I have found to be true personally is. Spaying just makes your life easier along with your baby. I usually have my dogs spayed before they come in season the first time. I wanted my dog Gucci to have puppies (Icouldn't find another small peek-a-poo to adopt) so she wasn't spayed until she was five (it took me that long to find a small male), it did not change her personality, if anything I believe she is in better humor not having to deal with that cycle. Her daughter Chanel is almost four, and has been spayed since she was six months old. She weights 4lbs. 12oz. and has been at that weight since she was 14 months old, I don't think it makes them fat or lazy. It just makes them a better pet. P.S. my dogs were REALLY cranky when in season! PMS big time.

As you can prob tell, i am not very good when it comes to computers.

Thanks for your help! Thats was really useful. Im going to get Fifi spayed as, like you said, it is easier for both me and her. Her breeder has a vet that is used to dealing with toy breeds, so will take her there.

Do you know how long Chi's are usually in season for? I read somewhere she should only bleed for a roughly a week. Is that correct...? Thanks.

 

The season usually lasts about 20 days. They spot color for the first 10 days, days 11,12,13,14 have a clear or almost clear discharge. These are danger days, the time they will permit a male access to them. Some of these ladies are not ladies then, they are HUSSIES. If the female is not bred then they will spot pink for another 5 to 7 days. Every female is a little different, but this is pretty general for small dogs. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your words of wisdom! Its much appreciated. Is good to know what to expect. As have never owned a toy dog before.

Also, i am thinking of gettin another Chi, as very soon both me and my partner will both be at work from the hours of 10 until 4 weekdays. And i dont want Fifi to get lonely. Or do you think she will be fine for that length of time...? She plays well on her own, and tends to keep her self busy with chews, toys, etc. However, she does really like the company of other dogs? Not sure what to do...

 

I agree with the previous posts, there is no need to wait, get her spayed now! :idea:

About getting another Chi, if you have the time to properly care for another puppy, then I would say go for it! I think it would be great for your current Chi to have a canine companion, especially for those hours that she would be alone while you are at work!
