    Hi

I bought a 9 week old Lab x Golden Ret yesterday from a pet store. It has been throwing up snce last night and started having diahrea this morning. I brought it to the vet and she said to give it some electrolite mixed in water until 6 tonight. Then i can give it a little bland diet food.

When i took him home i let himhave some electrolite water 2 mintues after he drank it he threw up again. Im not to sure what to do.

If he does not get better by tommorw morning i will take him to the vet again. Have any of you had this experience before?

    Thanks

This could be a couple of things. It could be stress from coming to a new environment but it could be Parvo which is very common in puppies and not to scare you very deadly if not treated soon. Did you and your vet discuss this option? If not better real soon I would take him back or possibly get a second opinion.

I talked to the Vet about Parvo, but she said it was highly unlikely, but she couldnt completely rule it out.

The puppy has just woken up and spewed up all the electrolite it drank . I have rung the pet shop owner and told him about the situation. He said he will find a mobile vet to come out to look at him.

    I will keep you uptodate.

    Thanks

Has your puppy been able to keep any liquids down? Hopefully the moble vet was able to help you. If it is parvo there are alot of great threads on this board about parvo, some treatment tips (to be used under the care of your vet), how to clean everything since the virus lives on, and there are alot of parvo survivors on the board! I think it was very nice of the pet store to send a moble vet out. Most of them dont care when they sell a puppy and it gets sick. Best of luck to you guys!

    Hi

I talked to the pet shop owner and we agreed to meet at the veterinary hospital. They have admited him overnight to place on a drip.

The vet didnt mention anything bad, but as a precaution to take the puppy in.

Whats good about this is the Pet shop is paying for all the expenses of the puppy at the vet, including medications.

I will keep you up to date on his progress tommorw

    Thanks

Oh, Titanium.... I was just reading your posts.....

I'm happy to hear that the petshop was quick to respond with a mobile vet! that's awesome... some of them would just say "oh send me the bill"....

My dog was in the hospital for two days in september. He was vomiting all the time ... it turned out to be pancreatitis in his case. I know that he did soooo much better after they hooked him up to the I.V.s....He was "hooked" for two days.....

Please keep us posted on your baby!

What I don't understand is WHY your vet didn't do a parvo test? This is so obvious, and that would tell you almost instantly (within 10 minutes) if that is what you're dealing with. If so, the vet would admit the pup to the hospital, start an IV and treat symptomatically for Parvo. There is no cure - all vets can do is treat the symptoms and hope for the best. Pancreatitis, as one poster mentioned, would be very uncommon in a young puppy. My guess is its Parvo, since he's still vomiting. Could be gastroenteritis (from ingesting an irritating or spoiled food) but any time a puppy is vomiting a lot, Parvo should be the vet's first suspicion, until proven otherwise. I sure hope the other vet does a Parvo test pronto! Time is of the essence, and this pup (if he has parvo) needs to be hosptialized to save his life. Does he have diarrhea? Bloody diarrhea is also an indication of parvo, and no appetite, and listlessness.

    UPDATE

I called the vet this morning at 9.00. He told me that my puppy was drinking and not throwing up. He was still having some diahrea but it was good he was keeping fluids down.

He will start to give it some bland diet food and see if he can hold that down. If all goes well i can go pick him up at 4.00 and bring him home.

So now i wait till 4.00. 4 hours to go and counting....

I would like to add its not uncommon for a young pup are any animal to have Pancreatitis as they can be born with it along with any other internal problems and all it takes is for something in there diet to trigger it off.

Vets usually test for Parvo,Distemper,Iron Liver,Kidney,Protien,White and red cell Count. Glucose when a pup is ill well mine does anyway, But just because you think its uncommon in a pup dont assume it.
A young pup is susceptible to anything and everything along with any other animal on the planet.

    Hi all

    Thanks for the support

He is back and running about like crazy. Definately a lot more energetic. He got better over night and is eating lots.

    Very excitable!
