This afternoon I cleaned out and harvested the last of my garden, which I had pretty much abandon for the last month or two. In my desertion, my catnip plant had thrived and I brought home a grocery bag full of catnip for footsie and to give to friends. When I walked in the door Footsie went nuts and was tearing into the bag so I gave him a couple leaves. I had forgotten to wash them first, but I don't garden with any chemicals, so I thought it would be OK.

15 minutes later footsie threw up a small amount of yellow liquid with peices a catnip in it. He very rarely throws up (this is probably the second or third time in the last year) so I'm being the worried owner that I become. Could it have been the catnip that made him sick? Should I throw all of it out? Or try again tomorrow? Would it be bad to give this catnip out to other if it could be the reason my cat threw up? My best friend's cat is ill with kindey disease and I wouldn't want to do anything to make him worse!

    Any thoughts are welcome.

do you have your garden in one of those community garden areas? (it sounds like you do because you said "when i came home"). if you do than maybe the gardens were all sprayed with a pesticide or some kind of germination that you didn't know about. :0011:

Unless he just ate too much and got too stoned?

yes, its a plot in the community garden at my office. They make a huge deal about it being organic so I'm sure it wasn't sprayed.

I'll trying washing some and giving it to him.

maybe its like grass....they throw up grass very readily. but me?? that would be the last of the catnip for me. i dont think throwing up is good for a cat, even if it is "organic", or "just grass"!! :0011:

Maybe he just ate too much and his body rejected it, as cats' systems often do when too much of something new is detected in the stomach.

I never give Luna straight catnip for her to consume, I just take her soft toys and rub them a bit into the catnip bag, getting small pieces of catnip all over it. That seems to completely satisfy her, and she ends up on her back, biting and kicking the toy for a few minutes. I've often wondered how she would react to the fresh stuff, I'll have to grow a plant one of these days for her.

By the way, is it true that the reason that (some) cats like catnip is that it contains a compound that mimics the scent of a dominant female's urine? If so, then I don't think that it's as much of a drug as it is a pheromone that causes a physical reaction.

Is Footsie ok now? A small amount of yellow liquid isn't bad. It must have been some fresh potent cat nip!
