how easy was your dog to train--can he do many tricks?

Hi, I was wondering how quickly your dogs learn new tricks. It seems like it's taking my Oscar forever to learn the basic commands--and then even though he knows "sit"--he has to think about whether or not to do it. I was so embarrased in puppy class 2 weeks ago when he was the only puppy who would not sit--and he has known the command and practiced it for several weeks. Luckily last week in class he sat just fine.

I have been working on "down" all week (several times per day for about 5-10 minutes each time) and it is only just now that he is beginning to get it--but now when I say "sit"--he goes "down." I would just chalk it up to him being a puppy but he is getting close to 5 months and one of the pups in the class (who is only 13 weeks) already knows about 15 commands.

On the plus side--he is a social butterfly and loves everyone--and is such a snugglebug. And he is completely litter trained--which is more important to me than sit or down.

Just wondering about other peoples experiences training a toy breed

 

My poms will sit on command, go out side and go to their bed and lay down on command. I trained them with treats and lots of priase. One of them is not too good on the sit command but has the dancing thing down!

 

Oh I am so proud of my two little guys, so here is my chance to brag a bit! LOL :lol:

I am just so incredibly amazed at how quickly my two shih-poos learn and catch on to things!!! (Which, by the way, can work against you...trust me, I know! hehe :mrgreen: )

Here are the commands that my two shih-poos know and are successful at every time:

~Sit
~Stay
~Down
~Come
~Leave it
~Stop
~Roll over
~Jump
~Dance
~Heel
~Drop
~Fetch
~Quiet
~Off
~Shake
~Stand
~Back

Obviously I didn't teach them these all at once, but on average, it took them only a couple of days to about a week to learn each of the commands.

At only 9 months old, I couldn't be any happier with the progress they have made! They have completed two levels of obedience classes thus far, and will start their third shortly. I HIGHLY recommend them! :idea:

As far as your Oscar is concerned-->

The best advice I can give you would be as follows:

-patience
-persistence
-short training lessons throughout the day
-make the time really fun and exciting for him (small treats and TONS of verbal praise when he gets the command right)
-immediate correction
-and as you are already doing, continue on with those classes

Oh man, do I ever feel inept now! Mine will sit (sometimes), and they will get in their "beds" at night (most of the time) and they'll follow me inside when I call them (okay, so they'll only do that if they feel like it). {SIGH}


Baxter is smart, but very stubborn. And Graysie... well, good thing she's got her looks to get by on. B was on his way to being trained when we got G. I found it very hard to train him when she had to be with us at all times and didn't understand the commands herself.

Guess I'll go check out those Petsmart classes again....

Mine do what shihpoo says and it does take time .However each has their own little thing ,Buttons likes to sit with his head a crtain way (he likes to sit ) koko and Caesar love to dance ...Sam loves to ride on a large ball .He gets on it and rides it .We called him the "little circus baby " when he was young cause he was always on top of something ,but a large ball he loves .

 

Winnie was fairly easy to train...taking about 4 days to a weeks to eally master a trick....Winnie can

crawl
go to her "spot"
turn off a light
sit pretty
up
on the grass
stop
wait
find it
come
stay

she also learned the hand signals for most of these...i a very proud of her

I am impressed with all the tricks your dogs can do!!!! I feel a little better hearing that it took other dogs at least a couple days to master a trick--One of my friends was telling me Oscar should be learning in just one day--and I was really feeling as though my Oscar just wasnt too bright as sometimes it takes him a week.

Now that my expectation are lowered--I will work with him and be consistent.

Bailey can do the:
sit, down (lay), up, dance, speak, paw, over, stay, bed (get in bed).

We're working on "hit the snooze," "get daddy a beer" and "get the chocolate for mommy" at the moment..... cant' seem to get those ones down to well tho! ar ar ar \/

And winnie.... did you say TURN OFF THE LIGHT??????? get out of town!!!! LOL...... that's grrrrrrrrrrrrreat! :idea: I'd love to hear the story behind that one

 

Monster...I was watching animal Planet and I saw how they trained service dogs, so I thought how greatit would be if I could get Winnie to do some of these things, also dont you hate it when your in bed or just got comfy on the couch and the lights are on and you want them off...well not a problem...

Now if I can just get her to figure out how to turn the light on that wouold be nice

Mycat Greyson can and he can open any door ,even if it is locked ...LOL ! (my bathroom door lock slips easy and he knows it ) I thought since he was so good at it ,we could do a jewel heist together ,my problem is ,he doesn't like to ride and jewels are a long way from here . LOL !
