So, its goldfish you're trying to sex? I don't know much about them, just wanted to clarify, as guppies and goldfish are very different fish.

A big difference between goldfish and guppies is that goldfish are egg-layers, and guppies give live birth (live-bearers)

A lot of people used to call all smaller fish guppies, but guppies are actually a specific kind of fish.

I can't help you with the piranhas, but I can tell you that you would not want to try to breed goldfish as feeders. You want the actual guppies. I'm not sure if you'd be able to find 'breeder' guppies (I've never seen them in a pet store), but you could certainly find some of the 'fancy' guppies, which look like this:

Also, a tip for breeding feeder fish -- either have your guppies in a VERY heavily planted tank so the fry (baby fish) can hide or set up a second, smaller tank and put the fry in that once you see them in the tank. Guppy mothers will eat their young, as will mollies and platies.

    yeeeeep,

    gravity is right...
the guppy in his picture is a male..... males are very good looking fish... they have pretty colors and are almost always smaller than the females...

females from what i've seen are all bland beige color.. they are bigger and will have varying degrees of pregnancy indicated by tummy size.

whoever you speak to at your LFS when you go to buy Guppies will be able to show you which are males and females.

breeding gold fish out of the breeding season is v.difficult.

Try this, found it on the net.

Can you tell whether you have a male or a female goldfish? I couldn't and had no idea how to tell which was which. It is a difficult task at best but there are a few ways to help determine the sex of your fish. It is a most difficult task on fry less than a year old, but as a general rule, females are likely to be bigger than the males of the same age. When they reach spawning age, and the eggs begin to mature in the female fish, she will thicken in the ventral area. At the same time, the male will start to develop small white tubercles on his gill plates and on the leading rays of his fins, particularly on the first ray of the pectoral fin which can usually be detected on fish with head growth.

that was the way i was taught to sex my oranda. i looked behind his steering fins (pectral)sp. if he is a male he will have white lumps, small ones just behind his fins. i think with that rule i sexed my oranda (orion) as a male..

    take care.

Feeder guppies are great for breeding! They are very easy, but like the others said, you need to have the tank heavily planted or have a separate fry tank. They are smaller than and not as attractive as fancy guppies (the one in that picture) but breed just as well!! Many fish stores sell them, and they are very cheap.

Just keep in mind that you have to treat feeder fish just as well as you would any other pet fish. You have to keep up with the water changes, feed a good diet, and avoid overstocking. Otherwise you'll be doing what LFS's do and end up with unhealthy feeders which defeats the purpose of breeding them yourself in the first place.
