Hi, my name is Bob's Cat. I am new to this forum and am in need of urgent help. It all started about 2 months ago. My cat was sneezing a lot and the vet put the cat on Clavinox and the cat continued to have the sneezing problem. I called the vet who put the cat on Baytrill. A couple of days later, my cat started acting crazy. I was not sure if it was the Baytrill or what was/is wrong with her. So we took her off the pills and she continued to have the sneezing problem and she lost her appetite and continued to be nasty and was throwing up. She was also peeing and pooping on the rug.

Now she is near death. I took her to the vet today and they gave me 2 choices, either spend $600.00 on a battery of tests, just to start the process, or put her to sleep. At that point, I left the office immediately. I am now seeking advice on how to nurse my cat back to health. I would appreciate all input. Thank you! Bob's Cat

without knowing what the problem with your kitty is in the first place anyone giving your any advice could cause further harm. You can't treat if you don't know what is wrong

    some questions though

    vaccines - are they current?
    inside/out cat?
Any possible chance this cat has been exposed to any feline diseases?

Obviously you are willing to spend $$ on your cat to make it better. Seriously your best chances for your cat to regain its health is to have some bloodwork done.

Bloodwork to at least check liver/kidney function wouldn't cost much (my vet charges $60). Start there and see how that turns out...at least it's less than $600.

I'm sorry about your cat. Clavamox can be very upsetting to tummies and Baytril can also cause some health problems. Try a search to see what the side effects are for both and see if your cat might be exhibiting side effects from the meds.

Also you can try mixing some canned food (AD would be a good one) with Pedialyte so your cat doesn't dehydrate.

But as far as telling you how to treat the cat no one other than your vet can do that when they know what is really wrong.

    I hope everything goes okay

ya know, it's hard to say what i'm thinking and be nice about it... but i'll try.

u got the vets oppinion. we are not vets. u were told what needs to be done. you have 3 options, pay the money to find out whats wrong, put her down, or... let her suffer.

I agree with Mary on having bloodwork done first and then taking it from there and as long as they are drawing blood anyway I would also have the cat tested for feline luekemia and feline aids. My vet charges around the same as Marys vet for bloodwork. Good luck.

And also keep in mind that most vets will work out a payment plan. It doesn't cost anything to inquire about it. I hope your kitty comes out of this ok.

    Thank you for the support

I just wanted to thank everyone for the support. My cat was 17 years old. She lived a very good life. I had her by the fireplace last night and she pasted away. She was very peaceful when it happened. I was going to take her to a different (less expensive)vet today. I really think the vet make a big mistake with the Baytrill. I was able to find out some inside information that this stuff is very strong. It was too bad I was not told this when I got the pills. Now the more I think about it. Why did the vet use this stong of a pill on my old cat. I would say stay away from Baytrill.

    Thank you again,
    Bob's Cat

Sorry to hear about your Penny. :( At 17 she sounds like she's lived a good, long life.
Re Baytril - there are different opinions about the use of it and the more you read on the newsgroups the more you will want to blame the drug for Penny's death and not the illness itself. The fact remains that it is a drug approved for use in animals and it's like any other drug with side effects. It's an extremely strong one but I'm sure if it was proving fatal to animals the vets wouldn't prescribe it, and it would be pulled. I've used Baytril more than once on more than one cat and have never had it 'kill' them. In fact, it seems to have been the only thing that's brought them around their illnesses.
Please just have Penny's memories and don't make yourself angry believing it was a prescription that killed your girl.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please don't second guess yourself about the decisions you made. My Milo passed away in June. He had what we thought was an upper resp. infection. We went through all the same drugs to no avail. We continued to do tests, xrays, weekend stays at the emergency room costing more than $1200.00 and found that he had a tumor in his lungs...he passed away a few weeks later. It was his time....because of his age they wouldn't have been able to operate anyway. He led a good long life as your furbaby did.

    My thoughts are with you....
