We were trying to put it off but yesterday morning we had to have a 16 year old dog put to sleep. I had no idea it would be this bad, its like killing your best friend. She had cancer, there were several tumors on her body and I think they must have gone to her brain. In the end she would just kind of sit and stare at the corner and look at her water and food like she didn't know what to do with them. I know she was suffering and the dog we knew was no longer there but I have never had to do anything like this before. I couldn't go with my boyfriend when he took her and he thought he could go back with her but in the end he couldn't do it either. We're having her cremated so we should have her ashes back soon but right now shes the last thing I think of at night and the first thing in the morning. I'm sure some of you have had to do the same thing how do you deal with it?

I am so sorry. We also had to part with our best friend this year. We had our vet come to the house because that is where our dog would have wanted to be... with his family. My son and I held him while the vet administerd the shot. We had Klink for 14 years. (you can see him on my website tab at the bottom) That is a long long time for a german shepherd. We were so blessed to have him be part of our lives. We also had him cremated and when we build our new house we will be making a rose garden in his name. He is the only dog I have ever had that loved to smell flowers. lol He never chewed on them... he just liked to smell them.

It gets a little easier with time. But you will never forget your pal.

btw... you did the right thing.

Yes, you did the right thing. I too had to put my 14 year old cat down last year, and when he was gone it was so peaceful that i knew he was happier and healthier now and that i would see him again some day. no dog will ever replace the on you lost, but starting new in a few months or years, however long oyu need, will help you heal. it has for me. i'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss! The only thing that helps is time. I made a little memorial for my dog with photos and tags and later I planted a flower garden over her grave. I brought a box of tissues with me to work so I could sob quietly at my desk. The crying only lasted for a week or two, for the most part. The nightmares, too. But the good memories last forever.

You will never forget your pal. She had a wonderful life with you and if she could, she would thank you for helping her go when it was her time.

Some people find getting a new dog helps, but others need time. I think everyone feels a little bit like a new dog is betraying the old one, but dogs don't feel that way. Your best friend would want you to have a new friend, if you are ready. She may even send one your way - someday you will see a pup or a dog and just know it's the one.

Hang in there, and we are here for you if you need to talk.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I had to put my best friend Sheba down. It will be 5 yrs in March. I still grieve for her. But I always feel that it is one of the best gifts we can give our animal children. To be able to assist them in the ending of their pain and suffering. The anguish we feel is just our loss.

If there's a pet that any of us had to put to sleep, and it could speak to us, they would thank us for all the good years spent together and to be able to end his/hers life with dignity and with as little pain as possible.

Someday all of us will again be reunited with our animal children. I have no doubt.

Thank all of you for your words of kindness. This is one the hardest things I've ever had to do and I know it will get easier with time but right now everything, even coming home is tough. Trixie was black and when you came home after dark and hadn't left a light on you had to watch were you you were walking because you might just step on her. When I came in today it was getting dark and when I walked in the first thing I did was look for her. I guess old habits die hard. The place that does the creamations is about 60 miles away and they come to pick up your animal and take them and bring the ashes back the next day. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that I know shes being kept in a freezer at the vets until they come to pick her up. I know shes not there anymore its just the body but its still hard knowing shes in a freezer and will be there until Wednesday. I'll just be glad when its all finished. Thanks again guys you've been a big help.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have had to make that decision before and I can honestly say it's one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make.

I'm sorry. But at least you had time to say goodbye. I know it wasn't long enough. But I didn't get to say good bye at all to Charllotte.
Just know that all your beloved pets will be waiting for you at the rainbow bridge.

For months after my dog died, I could swear I heard her tags jingling every time I went out in the backyard. I kept looking for her to come rushing around the side of the house to see me. It still makes me tear up.
