I know it is very common in small breeds. My almost 2yr old Papillon (Max) has the same problem, and I can't believe it either. I brush his teeth 1x per week and I give him greenies 1x per week, he gets very good food, and only carrots, and milk bones for treats.

My vet told me that the only thing to do is keep brushing, constantly. So, I do, I brush 1x per day. :? It looks so horrible though, I know.

This might work for you, my vet gave me this liquid that you are supposed to rub on their gums and it helps break down tarter. That doesn't do it for me, it is very frustrating trying to brush their teeth tough, their mouths are so small and they have no lips to go around to get back there. LOL though. :)

Are you giving him those chewy bones? I think they're nyla bones. I stick to them religiously. I have a two yr old (big) dog that chews on them all the time and the vets keep telling me his gums and teeth are great. b/c of time constraints, I don't brush his teeth often. but I'm willing to pay the money to have his teeth professionally cleaned every 4 yrs to make up for my lack of committment.

I've begun giving them to my little guy (5 months) and so far so good.

    hope that helps!

Where do you get them? I never heard about them. I do try greenies once and a while, but they are so expensive.
Someone else told me to try yip-yaps mints for dogs, but they are too big for Rosco, he will choke on them for sure. He choked on his heartguard pill before. :?

I'm from Ontario, Canada. I get them from a store called Petsmart

I found a link for you

    http://www.nylabone.com/dog_chews/

They're kind of expensive $14CDN per bone (they're the big ones that you don't see on that link). It lasts a while tho, so I think it's worth it.

Casper, I did go to petsmart yesterday and I got them each a nyla bone (small one) they were $4.99 each, I got them each a greenie and then a bag of breath busters, my vet says they should work too because they have parsley in them. Hope that helps, it is so tough to try to brush their teeth all the time.

I will let you know what I think of them, I didn't give them the nyla bones yet, they had their greenie last night, it only last an hour or so.

When Rocky went in for a check up at the vet a while ago he suggested getting Rocky's teeth cleaned (professionally). He said that after they cleaned his teeth they would put this "wax" called OralVet on them and then every month or so you apply the product to your dogs teeth. Its supposed to prevent paque from adhering to the teeth.

I did buy the nyla bone, but they don't seem to care about it. :|

The problem w/having their teeth cleaned professionally is that Max is only almost 2yrs old, and they usually wait until they are 5 or older for that.

My little Rosco's teeth are beautiful, but he is only 10 months old, Max is 23 1/2. B-day coming up. I don't know what to do anymore, brushing doesn't seem to be helping either, I guess I will just have to deal w/it.

The only bone that Max and Rosco really love, is greenies, I will have to get more I guess. Greenies are just so expensive though. Anyone know a cheaper place to get them on line?

A good chew that I use for my pom-a-poo is at Petsmart. They're green and "cardboard-like" material. As they chew it will scrap their teeth and its minty-fresh. They're called Dental Rings by Omega Paw. And Maya is crazy about rope toys so we got her a Fresh N' Floss bone. That's just my advice. :D

Cosmicpixie, Are they expensive? They sound similar to greenies, but they are so expensive. Max eats one in like 1/2 hr.

Not really they rope bone is about four bucks or something and the dental rings are like five. The rope bones last for longer. Maya doesn't like greenies. But she does like the breath bones. Maya is pretty strong chewer for a little dog so she didn't get any satisfaction from the greenies. Hope that helped.
