    2 oscars

even though is super late, u could have managed 2 oscars and still am in a 55. My tiger is huge and my red is about 6 inches, the worst that has ever happened is when the red will will swim in the tigers path and the red will get GENTLY pushed aside. I have a pair of loving and forgiving oscars. And I only change their water once a month. and my tiger is exactly 12" and is 3 years old. I have two penguin 330 biological filters ans they are happy as can be, so.....i'm just sayin when the fish you currently have right now expire, go ahead and get two oscars. And what I have observed with mine is that when you put a good sized rock in the middle of the tank, and if they do get territorial, they'll split the tank in half and they will share the space at feeding time and nap time, mainly because they're too sleepy to know whats going on. I just brought a digital camera and I will try post a picture of my two angels. 8)

55 gallons simply is not large enough to handle the bioload of 2 oscars. What are your nitrAte readings before you do the water changes?

It was difficult for me to keep nitrAtes at a safe level with weekly water changes when I had 2 oscars in a 75. So with you having 2 oscars in a 55 and only doing monthly water changes, your tank is a ticking time bomb for HITH (if they don't already have it).

I have 140 gallon tank, 4' X 2' X 28" high and got an oscar awhile back to keep with my brown bullhead ... i'm a catfish lover but needed something that wouldn't hide during the day besides my gold gourami (which looked WAY too small for a tank that big) ... my O got along great with the gourami, bugged the heck out of the catfish (nipped him on the mouth when he wandered too close) and was extremely territorial when I introduced a jack dempsey of the same size (which went right back to the LFS for fear of its health and safety) ... they weren't even full grown, only about 7-8" each and I still had a hard time getting them to co-exist in a tank twice the size of the recommendations for fish of their type ... i think it's safe to say that every fish has their own personality and it's hard to say what will get along with what ... i've since given the oscar to someone else and inherited 2 baby channel cats that will move to a man-made pond when they're big enough (in other words, when they outgrow the 140 gallon) ... always wanted a red-tail and my LFS gets them in once in awhile ... never realised they got so big :? wish i had a MASSIVE built-in tank that spanned a whole room LOL

Plecos are wayyyy wayy messier then my JD he makes so much poop it snot even funny! I think a Oscar and a Con MIGHT be ok in a 55gallon but 2 oscars is a joke they get huge and thick!

Hi Krystina, You really might want to reconsider about the Redtail Cat. Even if you had the space to house him, when he gets to about 2 feet in length he will start eating you out of house and home. At that point your least expensive food would be fish filets, and with their apatite it would probably cost you close to $70 a week just to feed him.

thanks for the advice, but i think just learning how big they get alone ruled that one out ... though, if i had the money to build a tank big enough to keep one, i'd hope i'd have the money to feed it too LOL

They're just so beautiful, and I've only ever seen them small (8-10 inches) but never really asked about their size potential ... wasn't in the market for one at the time, just always liked the look of them ... i always do a ton of research when i decide on a fish before i even think about buying it ... like i said, i've always wanted one ... but haven't been ready to actually BUY one ... my tank's full for now ... when the channels leave, i think i'm gonna get 2 more ... they're wonderful to raise and very active, even during the day ... and they're growing like bad weeds LOL ... i got them both around 4" in the summer and they're probably going to outgrow my brown bullhead in a month or so (in length anyway ... the bullhead eats like a horse and is rather chubby) ... they're eating minnows now ... when i first got them, they couldn't even take in a guppy, their mouths were so small ... too cute.

anyway, i'm rambling ... i love my cats LOL ... people don't get it, but what's to get? they're beautiful!

And how big is your tank? How big/old are the fish? And how long have they been together?

I'm kind of afraid I'm going to read that he has all those fish in a 55g and it's been fine for a week already.

lol i couldnt agree more. anyways RRusso70.. Im hoping you have about a 2000 gallon tnk or more because the bioload of all those fishes would need an incredibly sized tank. :!: anyways chelle i asked you in another thread about 12 neons in a 10g. what type of palnts would you recommend? anything special? let me know. -tl
