Im getting ready to build a new tank that will be around 300 gal. It will be 7' long by 3' tall and 2' deep. What thickness/type of glass should I use ? I want to use a filter system that can all be stored in an under cabinet/stand that the tank will be built on. The tank will be open on all sides so the filtration will have to be through the bottom . Any tips/help would be appriciated.

on the glass thickness, maybe check with a department store, such as Lowes or Home Depot.

Hi PJS111881, I don't think Lowe's or Home Depot will be able to help you. You most likely need to talk to a commercial glass company. They can tell you how thick the glass will need to be given the dimensions and how much water it will be holding back. Both of those factors can change the amount of pressure exerted on the glass. Things to consider; Glass will not bow as much as plexiglass with that amount of pressure, but glass is far more susceptable to pressure break. Also if you are going with glass and it needs to be greater than 3/4 of an inch thick it will probably need to be laminated ( glueing two pieces of 3/4 inch glass together ). With plexiglass you can probably get 1 1/2 inch plexiglass without it being laminated. You can probably get by with 3/4" glass but don't take my word for it. Check with a commercial glass company.

I found a page that says that 22mm glass is what i need to use, that is about 7/8" thick I think that im gonna go with 1 1/4" just to be safe Any ideas on the filtration? Would a S.A. Cichlid tank bennifit from a protine skimmer :?:

    Thanks all

I have foound the solution to my filter problems. A canister filter made by Eheim that can handle 500 gal. I think that I will us two smaller filters from them rated at 200 gal each. Anyone had any dealings with Eheim???

well iv spent alot of time trying to call ehiem Ehem! as in the coughing noise.

I was told eheim is good and for christmas tho, im getting a fluval 304. - fihs addict how effective is the 304?

i was told that they had so many probs with the fluval 404 that they kept having to take it off the market and relaunch it but its never been better than the 304.

    Take care.

    xx
