Yeah, thats what everyone says! Funny thing is she was born a solid dark Bay!!! Over the years she's gotten whiter and whiter....

She's going at the end of Feb to be bred to COlonel Diablo a Appy stallion:

Question - when you breed SA to Domino, what colour of coat do you plan to get on the foal? I don't mean plan, but what could the variations be, or do you know exactly? I am not suggesting at all that you breed for coat colour, I am just curious...

I have always been interested in the mixing of different coloured animals, and people for that matter, and what the out come will be. Ex: my sister has bi racial (hope that sounds politically correct) children (black & white) and her youngest daugther has bright red hair and light brown eyes. The other children have black hair and dark brown eyes, but the same facial features. It is interesting to me how the same parents can produce differnt colouring. My sister, brother and I are all blond with blue eyes, but my other brother has brown hair and brown eyes, but both of our parents are blond/blue. Strange, eh?
Also, I understand that with breedings dogs, the breeder can anticiapte what coat colours will be born? Like Aussy's and merles and all that stuff?

 

My understanding is the more you know about the genetics of the parents, the more you can predict colors or possible colors. You have to be really careful in the case of merle aussies, because two merles could produce a totally white pup that is blind (or is it deaf??). And a dog that does not appear merle can carry the gene.

The only thing I have ever bred was a pair of mice once. They were pet store mice, so we didn't know their background. We could have ended up with all black babies, but instead we got a really neat variety of colors. Unfortunately, most of them died fairly young and many got cancer. Just goes to show why you should not breed when you don't know what you are doing and don't have quality animals to work with.

 

Not a wierd question at all!

First of all, I took a 6 week class on genetics and then another whole semester in College on it.

Baiscally, the stallion MUST be Homozygus for the Black what we call "Color" foals...

SA is Heterozygous. She will likely, because black is always the dominant gene, have a black and white baby, OR a tri colored baby.

Her mother was a Palamino Paint, hetero recessive for the gene, and her Daddy was a Red/white Tobioano, ressessive to the gene. She should have come out a paint, but instead we got a SOLID red mare (Soral)

Sassy is Hetero Dominant for the "frosting" Colonel Diablo, is Homozygous dominant for the "blanket" so, Its likely we'll get a baby with a blanket, and instead of the defined "spots" it'll be roaned.

We could get a roan baby, but thats up to the good lord to decide.

We bred her the first time to a Homo dominant Quarter Horse Stallion (my Stallion Ryan) and got a red roan baby... so it COULD go either way.

More than likely we'll get a baby either JUST like her or JUST like daddy. since she's Heterozygous Dominant and he's Homozygous Dominant....

Now had she been Heterozygous Recessive, and He Homozygous Dominant like he is, we'd get a baby like him.

But since they both carry a Dominant Gene...who's to say..

I don't breed JUST for color. YES I consider the colorations greatly. But health, temp, athletic ability and confermation is my MAIN concerns...

I hope to one day get one similar to SARA's Jack.... He's a beauty...

But genetics and stuff is really intresting.
You can allways do a punnet square to see what you get, but you need previous generations.

Sassy's daddy looked like a dalmation dog. Awsome Stallion, her mother was a solid bay mare with few "flakes" on her hip..
And we got Sassy out of the two...LOL...

 

You should see when I looked into mouse genetics. I had genetics in college so I knew the basics of it. But mice have a billion different genes that control color. (Look here for a nice, confusing sampling: http://charismaticmice.homestead.com/genetics.html). I managed to figure out some of the "unknowns" of the parents after seeing the types of babies we got. It was really fun and interesting! But if I ever do it again, I will get breeding stock from a reputable person first.

 

Genetics varry from diffrent species....Horses are simple in genetics considering....
Cattle are more simple.
