On 12/04/2005 I decided to look for a new four legged friend. For some unknown reason I visited the local Animal Control...looking for a larger dog (Rotty or Golden) I was drawn to a poor little girl sitting over in the corner of a cage looking very forlorn. I immediatly fell in love with this scruffy, little mop of an animal. She had just arrived at the shelter which meant that I would have to wait one week for her to be available. I visited her for 5 straight days, praying that no one would claim her. Surprisingly no one did...I was able to adopt her. Her name is Zoey and she as been pronounced a Schnoodle by her vet. Her start with us has not been without trauma...after being with us for approx. 7 days she had what everyone thought was kennel cough. First vet kept sending her home.. Finally got frustrated and made appt with one of the oldest vets in town.. He took one look at Zoey and advised that she had an advanced stage of distemper...she had less than 50% survival!!! He shot her full of tetracyclene..gave me an RX of same med 1000 mgs per day...and adv 1000 mgs of vitamin C and lots of love....Guess what? She made it....She chews gum now and then...other than that she is in great shape. I am new to this breed so any info would be appreciated.

Hello, and welcome to the board.
Thanks for saving a dogs life by going to the shelter! Great choice!

I found this link about Shnoodles,
    http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/schnoodle.htm

Also, you might want to check out info on poodles and schnausers (sp?)

Good Luck, and please post some pics if you can.

I am so happy to hear that your Zoey is doing well!! Sounds to me like Zoey has found a very loving home now. Thank heavens you went to another vet. Have you thought about contacting the first one to tell him/her what happened? Not to be snotty, but just to "inform" them?

Wow, amazing. Its very common for a dog thats not been vacinated for kennel cough to get it at a shelter. Its fixed easily with antibiotics. She may have a cough for a few weeks after. Keep her away from others dogs till she's healed as it is vert contagious. Its the dogs version of a cold. Did you know that one of the dogs that were bred into the schnauzer was the poodle. We have two poodles. My mother in law has a schnauzer. Both breeds are very smart. You will need to learn to clip Zoes hair, or send her to the groomer once a month. Congrats on her making it thru the distemper. Distemper, robs a dog of its ability to comtrol its movtions. There had been an influx of dogs in L.A. that had been diagnosed with it in the shelters last year.

I had a Schnoodle growing up and he took more after the poodle then the schnauzer. He was the most loving loyal dog I ever had. Also had a Schnorkie but he wasn't as loving as our Schnoodle. They are wonderful dogs!

....I am finding out how loving and loyal...when I get home from school all she wants is to follow me and make sure I don't leave her sight
