My Dog w/ a Kidney Failure

I have a 3 year old female Shih Tzu who wasn't acting well the past few days. She wouldn't eat... she wouldn't move... even for her favorite toy or favorite dish. Took her to the doctor and he said she has had a Kidney Failure. He doesn't know if it's acute or if it's hereditary. I'm not even going to get any other information than that until Tuesday/Wednesday when her tests come back. She's still in the hospital...

I've read that if it is indeed hereditary, I will probably lose her.
If it's acute, she has a good chance to survive.

Anyone had anything along this line happen?

I've never had a dog with CRF (chronic renal failure) but I have had a cat with this - but she was about 7 years old when diagnosed. With strict vet care and strict diet she did survie 8 more years...but I had to be extremely diligent with her diet.
I found this info for you - CRF for dogs and cats is similar

I'm sorry to hear about your dog - I hope she gets better! You can go to Yahoo groups and look for a group for dogs with renal failure and they might be able to give you a lot of info.

Good luck, and let us know how she's doing.

Well the doctor called this morning and said that her results weren't showing a significant improvement, and that it didn't look good. He said we can give it one more to day to see if she improves... otherwise we should think of euthanasia. We even spoke with the owners of her parents, and neither the parents nor any of her brothers or sisters have had any trouble along this line. So if it's acute, why can't the doctor help?

I went and saw her in the hospital, and she wasn't very responsive. The only thing that we said that she responded to was "Wanna go bye-bye?". Quite sad actually... This is a very hard thing to deal with.

I woundt give up if you can get her on a crf diet and see how it goes. Back in October my cat was diagnosed with kidney failure and the vet wrote him off. He has been doing quite well

We put my dog, Topaz, to sleep today. She wasn't getting better, and she was real weak. She haden't eaten in almost a week... it was for the best.
I don't know why she was taken from us so young... only 3 years old...

She will be missed, but kept in our hearts forever.

I'm so sorry for your loss. If you need to talk, we're here for you. Sometimes some sort of memorial - like a photo or a poem or a favorite toy - helps.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. My heart goes out to you. I lost my Shih Tzu @ 10 years ago to kidney failure - he was only 18 months old. I still remember very vividly the heartbreak of looking into those cloudy eyes and having to make the decision to let him go. I takes a lot of love to make that decision.

I still have her favorite toy... her "rat". I dunno what the think even is... just a scratchy furry lil thing... but the second she woke up it was the first thing she went to look for.

Topaz always smiled.. sounds funny, but Im serious. The dog would smile... only dog Ive ever seen smile... I'll have to post the pic up here so you can see.

Thank you all for your kind words.
